All great novels must have a character who can narrate the story in the most intriguing way. Mark Haddon’s novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is narrated by Christopher John Francis Boone. Throughout the novel, Christopher educates the reader about autism, explains why he exhibits unusual behaviours, and allows the reader to understand his relationships he has with certain characters. Not only is it a good decision for Christopher to be the narrator, he is the best possible narrator that could have been chosen. Christopher is a great narrator because he educates the reader about autism. Many people who suffer from autism have extensive knowledge on a specific subject and therefore are capable of major accomplishments

Some of these odd behaviours are done to calm himself. When Christopher explains why he would be a good astronaut, he says “I really like small spaces, so long as there is no one else in them with me. Sometimes when I want to be on my own I get into the airing cupboard outside the bathroom . . . and sit there and think for hours and it makes me feel very calm” (Haddon 41). This exemplifies Christopher’s use of very odd behaviours to calm himself. Christopher is the only character in the novel capable of explaining how he makes use of this odd behaviour. In addition, Christopher demonstrates an odd behaviour when he makes certain decisions. When Christopher explains why people make certain decisions, he says “But you don't know if you are going to like something because you haven't tasted it yet, so you have favourite foods and you choose these, and you have foods you don’t like and you don't choose these, and then its simple” (Haddon 85). This quote expresses Christopher’s dislike of trying new things. Even though this statement only applies to him, it proves that people with Aspergers only do things that they know they like from previous experiences. Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory exemplifies this behaviour by keeping to a fixed routine everyday.
