Judging Customers
Judging customers can turn off big spenders

ARTICLE : Awadhesh Singh
Just as you can't judge a book by its cover, you shouldn't judge customers by the way they dress, speak or act.

Years ago, a colleague of mine sold stereo equipment at a regional electronics store outside of Tacoma, Wash. One night, the staff was preparing to lock things up when a scruffy-looking young man entered. He was dressed much more casually than the typical customer: torn jeans, a soiled sweatshirt and a ratty ball cap. He sauntered through the stereo department with his hands deep in his pockets, glancing at products seemingly beyond his economic status.

Assuming the young man was just killing time, the staff ignored him and continued getting the store ready for closing. My colleague, however, approached the man and welcomed him. The young man expressed interest in an assortment of stereo components and speakers. As his co-workers looked on incredulously, my friend rang the sale and the young man paid him from a roll of cash he pulled out of his pocket.

After the customer loaded the boxes into his car and left, my colleague's co-workers speculated about how this grungy young man who looked like he'd been sleeping in a bus station could afford a few thousand dollars worth of stereo equipment.

My friend, who'd chatted up his customer, explained: The young man had just driven home from Los Angeles, where his band had signed a deal with a major record label, and the first thing he wanted to do with his advance was buy his family some gifts to celebrate.

The young man went on to achieve fame and fortune with his friends in a rock band that helped fuel a fashion trend for grungy attire: Nirvana.

My friend succeeded in that sale because he looked past the customer's appearance and followed a simple rule: assume every customer who walks into your store is there to buy. Ignoring customers by assuming they're not interested in buying or unable to pay

Clarks worked for him for 17 years and has giving the company some great ideas and products but has never gotten any recognition. The only time of the year Clark appreciates his job is Christmas time. When he gets his Christmas bonus check. This year he was going to surprise his family by spending the Christmas bonus check on a swimming pool. The night before Christmas he receives a letter from the company messenger and Clark thinks it’s the bonus, so he dashes into the living telling the family about the pool. When he opens it says “ sorry he have cut bonus’s for finical purposes but here’s a gift certificate for the jelly of the month club”. Of course while everyone is down and sad crazy uncle Eddie has to come in and say, “ Clark that’s the gift that keeps on giving. “ Then Clark screams out, “ Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged,…

First, the way Sammy sees the regular customers reveals that he is a dynamic character. In the beginning, Sammy is at the cash register checking out a “witch about fifty with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrows” (Updike 18). The reader can tell Sammy has strong perspective on the customers that come in to the store. He sees them as disgusting, evil, lifeless and dead by the descriptions he gives the audience. As the story continues, Sammy looks down the lane and notices “the sheep pushing their carts down the aisle— [while] the girls were walking against the usual traffic” (20). The girls’ unorthodox direction represents Sammy noticing that the customers are followers-- not wanting to break the cycle like the girls. From the description Sammy gives, the reader notices that he does not want to be like the customers, following the same rules, guidelines, and policies. By the end of the story, the girls are stopped by Lengel, the manager, when they reach the check-out lanes. The customers that were showing up, “like sheep, seeing a scene,” crowded around Stokesie’s lane to avoid any confrontation that was happening out of the usual (22). Sammy’s way of describing what the regular customers would do in a tough situation makes him wonder if this is the type of life he…

Sammy’s attitudes toward the customer show him as an immature young man. Sammy’s comments and how he described customers as being old, dull, and unable to relate to young people. He addressed the first customer he comes across as “one of these cash-register-watchers, a witch of about fifty with rouge on how cheekbone and no eyebrow, and I know it made her day to trip me up”. He also described them as a “sheep pushing their carts down the aisle”. Through Sammy’s attitude toward the customers, we can say that his tired of regular customer, regular customers including these older married women, with kids, the overweight lady, and the old ladies who spend years trying to catch an error by cashier. We can simply see his immaturity and he does not particularly care for the customers.…

    A Tragedy Labeled Grunge

And then there were none. This short sentence sums up the entirety of the grunge rock era in the early 1990s. No musical genre in history has found greatness so quickly and then raced into oblivion as fast as grunge did and few genres have relied so heavily on just a handful of artists. In the early 1990s there was a new type of music that was taking the masses by storm. There had been nothing new in the pop music world for a number of years and generation X was coming of age and demanded some kind of change. The days when Michael Jackson 's style of pop and Metallica 's methodical hair/death metal ruled the airwaves were just about to end. Generation X needed more relevance in their music even if it was not as cheery and magical as pop had sounded for some time. Madonna, ZZ Top, Rick Astley nor any other of the day 's pop or rock singers could fill this void. The band that could be most closely considered in the realm of the message of grunge would have been Pink Floyd. The band has always incorporated a very real and sober message in the music they have produced. Nothing else mainstream was similar in any way. That is where the story gets fascinating because the original grunge band members never intended to be mainstream. The majority of the bands created music to play at underground shows and the music was intended only to be played for people who really wanted to hear and feel it. The popularization of the music and the bands that received the grunge label gave way to both the rise and the undoing of the genre, the bands and the band members themselves. This paper will concentrate on the short but very eventful life of the grunge genre. A focus will be on two of the pioneer bands, Nirvana and Alice In Chains, which were both from the Seattle, Washington, area and share an epic journey through the early 1990s.…

Serrano said. His idea is if they had the best-looking college kids working in their store, everyone will want to shop there. This idea is not wrong. Salesperson might be good looking for customers. Customers maybe will buy things that good looking salesperson sold. But a store can’t be made up by all salesperson. They need a manager, accountant, or other employees who stay in the back of the store. Those guys can’t be only beautiful. They need skills and ability to support the store or company to make sure it will keep running.…

Because there are so many changes in the history of the music I will focus on Grunge Rock for this portion of the essay. "Grunge music is generally characterized by "dirty" guitar, strong riffs, and heavy drumming. The "dirty" sound resulted both from a stylistic change in the standard method of playing punk rock, and from the common use of guitar distortion and feedback", is the description of the music offered by answers.com. This music was started by bands from the north-west of the United States such as Nirvana, from a town near Seattle, Washington. Nirvana was around from 1991 to 1994 which was around the same time that Grunge music was popular. It began with Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" becoming a hit among fans and the music soon escalated into a mainstream endemic. Many bands such as Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, Emerged over those years and sold many records though. Suddenly, Kurt Cobain allegedly killed himself by shooting up with 3 times the lethal amount of Heroin and shooting himself. He was found the next day in the greenhouse of his home in Los Angeles. There is a theory among Nirvana fans, however, that Courtney Love, Cobain's wife, paid someone to kill him. However, the Los Angeles Police refused to reopen the case after his death was ruled a suicide. From there the music lost momentum and soon slipped back into…

On a cold, brisk snowy night in New York City little did I know I was about to make an encounter with someone I'd never forget. I was waiting for a friend in McDonald's so she could get her food and stay inside for warmth, when I realized someone not too far behind me was talking. Startled, I turned around I saw a homeless man wrapped in torn up blankets, shaggy, undone brown hair and trying to keep warm like the rest of us. My first instinct was to stay clear until a woman had drooped her purse and money rolled around his feet, as he bent down to retrieve the money to all our disbelief he handed her the money and told her something extraordinary. As he handed the woman back her money with shaky hands, he looked down and exclaimed how,"Money…
