Juan Ponce De Leon Research Paper
In the 1500’s - 1600’s there were many explorers of the New World. One of those explorers was Juan Ponce de Leon. During this time period, the Spanish Crown sponsored many explorers, but because of his expedition Juan Ponce de Leon was rewarded. Although there were many Europeans, Juan Ponce de Leon was one of the hardest working explorers of his time. Juan Ponce De Leon, was born in Santervas de Campos, Spain in the year of 1460. He married Leonora, and had three children with her. When his earlier expedition led him to the Southeast Coast, which would later be known as the United States. He gave Florida its name, and went on to become governor of Puerto Rico.
In the first decade of 1500, Juan Ponce de Leon built settlements in Hispaniola (Modern day Haiti and Dominican Republic), started farms, and constructed defenses in hopes of establishing an island colony for Spain. On his journey he did many things. Historical encounters with the Caribbean people on Puerto Rico are vague, but it seems there was series of military engagements with no clear outcome. Around that time Juan Ponce de leon learned of a Caribbean Island called Bimini, on which was rumoured to have miraculous waters purported to be a “Fountain of Youth”, which he believed to be Asia. In March 1513 he led an expedition, at his own expense, of three ships and more than 200 men to Bimini from Puerto Rico. A month later he and his men landed on the coast of Florida.
