Josie's Care Communication Case Study
The communication between nursing, physicians, and family in Josie’s case was clearly lacking in many aspects of effective communication. First of all, perception. The nurses clearly saw that Sorrel (Josie’s mom) was concerned about Josie’s care. However, they ignored her concern and proceeded with the treatment, because they “made sure” with the doctors. Even though the nurses saw Sorrel upset, they chose to ignore that fact, which is just outright disrespectful. Secondly, evaluation. The nurses (and the doctors) heard the state that Josie was in, yet they did not reevaluate their decisions. In planning, the prioritized person would be Josie, who is the patient. The important goals for Josie at the time she was in the medical surgical floor would be to get her healed as soon as possible, which includes close monitoring of the patient and appropriate care. As a nurse, I would attend to patient’s needs, pay close attention to her changes, and listen to the parents for feedback (of the patient’s state), but also judge the patient’s state myself.
Difference in physical assessments is great way to show improvement of the patient. For Josie, since she was admitted to the hospital with burns, noticing difference in her skin condition is a great way to show improvement. Maybe Josie had red skin with blisters on them, but it disappeared, which shows improvement. Mental assessment can also show improvement, i.e. how responsive the patient is. Maybe Josie was not as active when she was first admitted due to her condition, but as her condition improved, maybe she was more active and talked to nurses more as she got
