Jose P. Laurel
I, Jose Paciano Laurel, do solemnly swear before the people that I will faithfully and conscientiously fulfill my duties as president of the Philippines, preserve and defend its constitution, execute its laws, do justice to every man and consecrate myself to the service of the nation.

Good afternoon, ladies and gentle. My fellow countrymen, the person standing right before your very eyes is no other than the 3rd president of the Philippines, the 1st and only president of the 2nd republic of the Philippines and the alleged puppet president during the Japanese occupation. It is I, Dr. Jose Paciano Laurel.

I was born on MARCH 9, 1891 in TANAUAN, BATANGAS. SOTERO LAUREL SR., my father, was a lawyer and an official in the revolutionary government of the 1st president of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo. My mother, JACOBA GARCIA, was a loving wife to my father and a caring mother to me. My mother and father did their best to let me finish my studies. I graduated elementary at San Juan de Letran. Finished my secondary education at Manila High School. Grabbed my degree in Law at University of the Philippines, College of Law in 1915. Finished my master’s degree at University of Santo Tomas in 1919. And finally, completed of doctorate of law at Yale Law University. As my life went on, I met this lady who captivated my heart. She is PACIENCIA HIDALGO, my ever beautiful wife. Paciencia and I were blessed with 6 lovely children.

Year 1943, I became the most powerful man in the country, I became the president of the Philippines. During my administration, our country was in the hands of the cruel Japanese. But I stood my ground as president of the Philippines, I did not succumb to the coercions and extortions of the heartless Japanese. Unfortunately, my administration met its end early in 1945. After which, there were numerous speculations that I became a puppet of the Japanese. I was even accused of treason. But I say this to you, I didn’t become a puppet but rather, a patriot.

I am being remembered by my fellow Filipinos as the 3rd president of the Philippines. Furthermore, I was a proponent of the Rizal Bill which mandates that all educational institutions in the Philippines should offer courses about Jose Rizal, especially Noli Me Tangere and El Felibusterismo.

Let me end my speech by a quote that I said during my court trial for treason.
“I am neither pro-American nor pro-Japanese. I am pro-Filipino”
Thank you, good afternoon and MABUHAY!

That was the famous promise of General Douglas MacArthur to the Philippines before leaving for Australia. When Filipinos come to think of it, there are some who have probably forgotten him or possibly did not know what he did for us at all. Having been given the task to write about the American rule in the Philippines, I have decided to concentrate on writing about what General MacArthur did for the Philippines during World War II.…

This essay focuses on attrocities commited by the Imperial Japanese Army during their occupation of the Philippines and the ramifications of these actions on the Guerilla movement. The Japanese occupied the Philippines from 1942 to 1945 during which time they committed countless attrocities against Filipino combatants and civilians alike. In World War II, there were certain milestones in Philippine history such as the Bataan Death March and other transgressions towards the local populus that are obscured to many people even today. Being a Filipino and having a grandfather who was deeply involved during the Japanese occupation in Zambales, Philippines during World War II, I felt compelled to investigate this period of Philippine History. I scrutinized a variety of sources to help better my understanding of Philippine World War II history, and focused my research question which asks, “Did Japanese Atrocities in the Philippines have an impact on the uprising of the Philippine Guerrillas Movement after the American/Filipino defeat in 1942?” In researching this topic I found many different resources, both primary and secondary, such as personal interviews, books in university libraries, museums, and online, with the majority being personal accounts of World War II veterans compiled into a novel. Living and growing up in the Philippines was also an advantage as visiting the actual site of the Bataan Death March, reading newspapers in museums written in Filipino, and interviewing Filipino war veterans in my native tongue was a much more feasible task. I hope this paper will give light to the misconduct of the Imperial Japanese Army to some extent, and acknowledge the subsequent…

The second period of United States rule—from 1936 to 1946—was characterized by the establishment of the Commonwealth of the Philippines and occupation by Japan during World War II. Legislation passed by the U.S. Congress in 1934 provided for a 10-year period of transition to independence. The country’s first constitution was framed in 1934 and overwhelmingly approved by plebiscite in 1935, and Manuel Quezon was elected president of the commonwealth. Quezon later died in exile in 1944 and was succeeded by Vice President Sergio Osmeña.…

The year 1986 opened the door to a new era of military interventions in Philippine politics. The EDSA People Power Revolt showcased a total makeover in the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) image, evolving from an armed forces subservient to a 20-year dictatorship (Selochan, 1989:1) to an armed forces dubbed as the “protector of the Filipino people[i]” (De Leon, 2005: 47-49). However, barely four months after installing President Corazon C. Aquino in office, various elements in the military – Marcos loyalists, Guardians, and the RAM-SFP-YOU staged four successive failed coup attempts and two aborted coup plots from July 1986 to August 1987 (Selochan, 1989:11-15). Then again, in December 1989, just when civilian authority over the military seemed to have already been functioning, another failed coup attempt was launched, which almost toppled down the presidency. After a decade of calm at the close of the century, the AFP barged once more into the political limelight when former AFP Chief of Staff Gen Angelo Reyes, along with the commanders of the Army, Navy and the Air Force, unexpectedly withheld their support from their Commander-in-Chief at the height of EDSA Dos, which eventually forced the former president to leave Malacanang (Trillanes, 2004:14).…

Last July 28, 2014, President Benigno S. Aquino III had his fifth State of the Nation Address. This serves as a means to inform the nation about the present conditions of the country. SONA 2014 highlights the achievements of the administration on education, social services, economy, infrastructure, calamity efforts, jobs, rehabilitations after typhoons and earthquakes, modernization of AFP, security, ARMM Bangsamoro and livelihood. The President used many metaphors in uttering his speech, he started with a common Filipino saying, “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi makararating sa paroroonan.” It is just right because this is his second to the last year in service, before he entered, our country was filled with problems left unsolved. Before, we were considered “The Sick Man of Asia” with weak economy and sparse industry. Corruption was also endemic. And maybe when we look back to the past with a lot of problems impossible to solve, we will be motivated to correct mistakes, within the President’s leadership we began to hope and had our journey on a straight and righteous path or the so called “Tuwid na Daan.”…

After the proclamation and formal assumption into office, along with fancy celebrations and parties, the new government of Noynoy Aquino is now starting to confront the challenges and problems of the country. Its cabinet is now almost complete and its policies and programs, though slowly, are taking shape out of the motherhood statements and broad campaign slogans. With the winning of Aquino, surveys showed that there is an increased optimism for a better life in the coming months among Filipinos from all classes. The promise of good governance have impacted the people and an atmosphere of relief from nine (9) years of mismanagement, illegitimacy and very corrupt governance is certainly in the air. This situation compelled various sectors, especially the Left, to discuss and debate on how we should deal with this new government.…

Is he unprepared, or worse, ill-suited for presidential or parliamentary democracy?…
