Jordan's Lucky Day Observation
At the beginning of the observation, the students were divided into four reading centers. Diego’s reading group consisted of him, four students and his teacher, Ms. McGillen. The students were sitting in a semicircle facing the teacher. The students were reading, “Jordan’s Lucky Day” by Steve Parker. The students were taking turns reading outload. When it was Diego’s turn to read he stumbled across a word that he did not know. He was a little frustrated but Ms. McGillen encouraged him to try his best. Diego was engaged, sitting straight, and following along in his reading book. As they finished reading Ms. McGillen asked the students to identify the main character. Following, she asked “how did Jordan feel?” every student took turns answering

    After accidentally throwing a book at his teacher, he was told to leave the reservation so he wouldn’t lose hope. As a result of leaving, Junior lost his best friend, gained a new friend, had an identity problem and now he feels to blame for the deaths of his sister. Cowan limits the information of the text to allow the reader to form their own meaning. The text does not provide complete information about the boy in the story; it merely implies that he is feeling alienated and depressed. There is no text information that unambiguously explains that the boy is feeling alienated and excluded. In the last paragraph, the boy's difficulty is described by, 'He looked at the symbols on the paper and they blurred and made no pattern.' In this sentence, we assume that he does not understand the work, but this is only inferred.
