Jocasta Vs Oedipus
Oedipus the King, also known as Oedipus Rex, was one of the greatest tragedies written by Sophocles in the fifth century. The Theban legend is about King Laius and Queen Jocasta. After their son was born, an oracle came forth and told them that their son was destined to kill his father and marry his mother. The King and Queen then decided that this baby boy should not live any longer. They would abandon this baby on a mountainside with his feet cruelly pierced so that he could not crawl to safety. Laius and Jocasta thought that they were able to overcome their fate. However, a Shepard found the baby on the mountainside and brought him to the King of Corinth, for he and his wife were unable to conceive on their own. As young Oedipus grew up, …show more content…
The period of the movie is different then the time frame in the play. The play for instance, seemed as though the time frame of the events was spaced over several weeks. On the other hand, I interpreted the film to have taken place within a few days. In the beginning of the film, the citizens of Thebes are walking slowly and sickly to the front of Oedipus ' palace. The attire of the citizens does not coincide with the period of the play. The play was written in the fifth century and the wardrobe of the citizens looks as though it came from all different periods. When Oedipus enters the scene, he is dressed in a modern day white suit with a very long red cape. This style suit obviously would not be worn in the fifth century. Jocasta enters in a red outfit, which symbolizes blood, violence and guilt. Creon appears to be wearing a costume with a military or general style, consisting of medals and honors with high boots and buttons down the middle. This costume would not be worn in this century, as it is more appropriate for a World War II movie. The twelve members of the chorus are dressed in all black and in long black coats with white ruffles below each of their necks. The only member of the play that is dressed appropriately is Tiresias. He is dressed in long beige drapery from him neck to his ankles and open sandals with a shawl across his shoulders. An additional difference in the play was that the setting of the …show more content…
She has acted in over thirty-five films and has countless nominations. My reason for this pick is that she played the role of Olympius in the movie Alexander, the story of the King of Macedonia. She is an outstanding actor and would portray the role of Jocasta very well.

For the role of Creon, Russell Crowe would be a great choice. For his outstanding role in Gladiator, I think that the role of Creon would suit him perfectly. The epic film, Gladiator, which he played the main character, won five Oscars, another forty-five wins of other awards, for seventy-five nominations in total.

Clint Eastwood would be the best actor to play Tiresias. He is a very well respected actor and director with a history of acting in over sixty-five movies and has directed thirty. He has been acting since 1955 with his first film Revenge of the Creature. He has won countless awards for not only his acting but also his

There are two ways I can see to approach this question. The first the opinion of the chorus about the specific character of Creon and the second is the more general observation that the chorus makes concerning the abstract "man" at the start of the play. Both are simple enough to answer, but I will begin with the general.…

In the stories of Oedipus Rex and Antigone, there are many similarities between the rules of Thebes. Oedipus Rex is about a man who tries to escape his fate by running away from his supposed mother and father, just to end up fulfilling his destiny by killing his father and marrying his mother. Antigone is about a woman who has buried her brother against her king’s orders. Imprisoned in a cave as punishment, she proceeds to kill herself. Two of the rulers of the city of Thebes were Oedipus and Creon. In the two stories that depict these kings, many similarities arise in the areas of their hubris, their unmitigated disregard for Teiresias, and the rationalization of their fate of whose hands they have fallen victim to.…

Ruler of the Thebes, the fictional kingdom in the play Antigone, Creon in his speech argues that Polyneices, son of the late ruler Oedipus ought to have no burial. He supports his clam by first appealing to false authority, then using sentimental appeals, and lastly by comparing Polyneices to his brother, Eteocles. Creon’s purpose is to make sure nobody disobeys him in order to seem powerful in the eyes of his citizens. He adopts a demanding tone to assure he is well respected.…

In the play Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, the Greek audience experiences Oedipus’ heartbreaking journey to find out who he really is and how his hubris and many other fatal flaws contribute to his downfall. The Greeks loved a good tragedy and Oedipus Rex did not disappoint. In this play Oedipus was put on a mountaintop as a baby because his birth parents, King Laïos and Queen Iocastê, were told that one day Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother. To prevent this from happening King Laïos and Queen Iocastê put holes through his ankles and tied them with leather so Oedipus would not crawl away from the mountaintop and eventually come back and fulfill his prophecy. King Laïos and Queen Iocastê left baby Oedipus to the Gods on top of the…

Sophocles' Oedipus Rex revolves around the story of Oedipus, who now is King of Thebes, searching for the murderer of the past king. The tragedy is not so much that Oedipus is the murderer and committing incest with his mother. After all, he was fated to do so, and Oedipus commits these crimes unknowingly. The real tragedy of Oedipus is his trying to defy his destiny and compounding the troubles with his pride. Oedipus has the chance to stop the search for the murderer before the investigation starts. Even blind Teiresias, who tells Oedipus that he is the guilty party, wants Oedipus to stop although Teiresias can see the outcome and knows Oedipus' destiny. It is Oedipus' pride that, in telling the members of his court that he will search for the murderer, leads him down the ever narrowing path to the truth and his pride that will not allow him to stop the search.…

I will be addressing why I believe each director portrayed the characters Oedipus and Teiresias in their own manner. Starting off in the 1984 version, Oedipus is depicted by a man of his youth. He is dressed in a bright modern white suit. I feel the director of this film version may have been chosen white to make the actor stand out compared to the other characters that have been seen who were in faded darker color garments. But I feel there is another reason he chose this color. Oedipus in this film version to me has been portrayed as more than a mere man. When he enters the stage he emerges from behind these giant doors where only white light can be seen emanating from behind him. Could the all white background be a depiction of the heavens? At this time, that would have been Olympus which is home to all the gods. The gods of Olympus dressed in white togas. White there is that color again. I believe the director of the 1984 version felt like Oedipus thought of himself as a godly figure.…

Oedipus says: "Lost! Ah lost! At least it's blazing clear. Light of my days, go dark. I want to gaze no more. My birth all sprung revealed from those it never should, myself entwined with those I never could. And I the killer of those I never would" (67). It is at this point that Oedipus realizes everything: he is the adopted son of King Polybus; he is the true son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta; he killed his father, Laius; he married his mother, Jocasta; and Tiresias' prophesy was right in that he was the man he was looking for. When everything becomes so clear to Oedipus, he feels nothing but remorse. He must punish himself, and does so by gouging out his eyes with Jocasta's brooches. His monologue, brought about by his anagnorsis, foreshadows his self-inflicted…

I though that I would see that actors and actresses wear ancient costumes, and the stage sets and properties would be ancient Greek pattern. However, the style in this play is fresh in modern social environment. Contemporary clothing and adornment, furnishings, iphone, divorce lawyers, newscaster, Starbucks coffee house, swimsuits, gardening tools, even the goblet both surprised me and made me laughing. This modern interpretation of the ancient theme stimulated my thinking. The inspiration of this script must have been drawn from the real life in ancient Greek. Why do the same stories happen again and again after thousands years? Are humans still the same or not improving? Outside, the changes are huge, but inside, not much. Men and women still are very different in the emotional attitude while dealing with affection and marriage. People still stand in their own perspective to read other people. Both men and the women are selfish when they try to hold their benefits. Abandoned women still are distraught and furious. The rage of human still has such a huge lethality and destructive. Revenge is still horrible and tragic. People still prefer to sit inside the theater to see the stories of others. After watching the show, people still enjoy in talking about content of the plays and issues around the real life.…
