Antigone is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles. It deals with Antigone’s burial of her brother Polyneices in defiance of the laws of Creon and the state, and the tragic repercussions of her act of civil disobedience. Antigone defies the law, buries her brother, and is caught.
Oedipus had a curse on him that he didn't know about.Yet Oedipus is stubbornly blind to the truth about himself. King Laius, like most kings, wanted a boy. Not wanting the prophecy to come true, he sends the baby to be abandoned on some mountain. On his way he encounters a traveling caravan. Both claim right of way on the path. “ I hate the murders who killed my father. O, can this be justice, ( pg 128 ).” Oedipus finds out that he has murdered Laius, who was his father, and that he married his mother. The plot goes on to describe how he came about doing such horrific things. At first, Oedipus seems to be the villain, but it can't be so, because he did not know that he was adopted, and that the person he killed was his father. of course, he didn't know that he is marrying his mother either. A prophet named Teiresias enters next and Oedipus asks him for help discover who has killed Laius. However, the prophet is extremely reluctant to speak and begs Oedipus to let him go without saying what he knows. He then gives him some disturbing news, that Oedipus is the person whom he seeks and who killed Laius. Oedipus does not want to listen and calls the prophet a liar and a traitor, even saying that Creon, who sent him, was the designer in a plot against him to gain the throne. The prophet warns Oedipus that even if he doesn't want to hear the truth, it does not make it any less truth that he speaks. Several characters are willing to sacrifice themselves to save Thebes from destruction or for what they believe is right and just. Creon, for example, is ready to die in order to save the city.     This instantly places him right on top and boosts him up to fulfill the Kings position. His intuitive instincts and drive to put together his life signified him as a man always on a hunt. These qualities where huge attributes to his life however, he also had many negative traits which would end him. He was a man with a huge temper which leads right to his downfall.     Antigone, placed in many situations throughout the play, has to choose between her family and the law. Antigone chooses to honor her brother, Polyneces, by burying him even though she will break the law by doing so. Antigone asks her sister Ismene to help bury their beloved brother, but when Ismene says no, Antigone responds by saying, “But as for/ me/ I will bury the brother I love” (Prolouge.192). Antigone chooses to honor her brother and risk breaking the law because family means more to her. Antigone puts her family first, presenting her as a selfless person. Along with the risk of breaking the law, Antigone also risks her death. Once Creon tells Antigone of her punishment after finding out she buries Polyneces, she has to decide whether or not burying her brother is worth it.     Pride is a powerful emotion, it can lead us to be people we are not, and lead us to be hurt. The act of being prideful comes from the power we are given through society, to say we are something others cannot say they are. Its also what makes everyone who they are, but too much pride can seize control of us causing an uproar of karma to surge our way. In Antigone, the blind prophet, Tiresias warns Creon that, “A corpse for a corpse the price, and flesh for flesh, one of your own begotten.” Furthermore he states, “All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.” In Antigone the real crime is to be unjust with your power, just because you have power does not mean you have to use it, so it is shown throughout history, and in our media that certain examples exhibit this behavior. This is the major downfall in their ways, for example: Rome, King Nebuchadnezzar in the Bible, and even in our kids shows certain cartoons exemplify pride, teaching kids that it is wrong such as Sandy in Spongebob. Each character exhibit this prideful quality, in which in turn each has led to their down fall of some kind, and with this unjust power they have been reprimanded in some way. Sure the quote could be retaining to Antigone, Creon, potentially all the characters of the story, though the real audience it is preaching to is all of man-kind. Everyone has their flaws and faults, because pride is in all of us, it is human nature to take pride in all of our work. The overwhelming flaw in human nature is to be consumed by this beast of pride, to take control of the chains of power and keep our pride in check. Pride is a scary thing; Antigone kept her pride in check, though when Creon is consumed by his pride it becomes his fault. Thus it reveals to us that Creon is the tragic hero in which his hamartia is revealed, which in turn is his pride.…
