Jewish Museum Reflection
I've seen plenty of art throughout my life, whether it be in person or just through the internet but I've never actually observed and taken notes. Art has always been one of those things I always thought I wouldn't really understand. As a kid, I always wanted to draw but I soon realized how awful my cartoons were and gave up drawing, I did not really think art was for me. Viewing the Unorthodox exhibit at the Jewish museum was one of the first times I actually went to just observe art rather than look and move on. It was a great experience, I really liked all of the artworks but there were three from the exhibit that really stood out to me. to the city because of poor coordination with my friends. Lucky for me the next one arrived at 3:50. I went with three friends, Erik, Jennifer, and Kat. The ride to Grand Central was fairly quick as we had gotten on the express train. Originally I had planned on going to the Guggenheim museum but as I did not check the times before hand I didn’t know that the museum was closed on Thursdays. Due to my oversight I was forced to consult the list I had luckily brought with me in case of such an incident. I wanted to go to the El Barrio museum to see the visual illusion exhibit but the museum closed at around 5:30 I believe. The Jewish museum was practically the only one I could have gone to because it was open until 8 P.M. that day. The museum wasn’t too far from Grand Central but considering how cold it was and the laziness that fell upon us as we arrived to the city, we decided to take an Uber to the Jewish museum. The majority of the artwork was red and yellow, like fire, and had stars with either a skull or a flower inside of them. The colors were all blended except for inside the star. It gave me this feeling of balance. Although the painting had this theme of death with the fire and the skulls, the blending of colors and the flowers were all beautiful and equaled each other out. This piece reminds me of life. You make the most of your life and although life may not always be the kindest, forgiving, or provide the most company, there are lots of bright sides to life. There are plenty of beautiful things that come out of life and all the pain and suffering that we are all going through is just part of the painting. We are all mixtures of sadness and beauty and we are all in the same boat, we are not alone. Sometimes we feel odd and out of place because we are a little different but that’s exactly what makes this next piece my favorite

    When taking a trip to the Norton Museum of Art I chose a one dimensioned painting called Adam that was located on the first floor. The artist is Nicholas Carone and was painted in 1956. To the left of the painting, Adam, was another painting named Personage which was painted by Robert Mothewell in 1943. Personage is an abstract oil painting on canvas with multiple different colors. To the right of Adam was a sculpture called Sea Quarry and was created by Theodore Roszak. The sculpture was not an obvious choice that it was a sea animal at first. I had to stand there for a minute and really look at the sculpture to being to see what it was really intended for the sculpture to be. Returning to my original choice, Adam by Nicholas Carone, it is also an oil painting done on canvas. Carone first started with a plane black picture and continued to manipulate it with white paint color and other lines using different thick and thin brushes. The picture was made to represent and recreate light and shadow but is opaque.     The many faces of the mourning women suggest she is going through the stages of grief. Some faces of the women are very depressed with deep frowns and sorrowful eyes while other faces are brighter with much happier features and almost appear to be smiling.     The art work that stands out most to me is one that portrays a young boy as a soldier in the US Army. The human experience from this could be expressed as one of many, love, loss, pain, hope, despair, values, beliefs and as we hope not but even death. I think the artist had love, loss and pain in mind with the painting. This is meaningful to my life because I feel that this is a portrait of myself as a young boy.     This painting by Pat Steir Figure 129 Pink Chrysanthemum is three panels of flowers. The background of these paintings is pink and the flowers are white. The first panel of the painting has three flowers in a green vase. The flowers are kind of blurry the way that the light shined on them, and are centered. The second panel has just a close up of a single flower. Its closer than the first panel and has way more detail of the flower. You almost feel like you can reach out and touch the flower sitting there. The third panel brings it even more closer than the second and it becomes even more beautiful than the other two. The atmosphere that the pinks and the shades of blue and green with the purples too makes me want to wrap up with a blanket and lay there and just look at it. Its very peaceful and pleasant to look at. To me the artist is telling everyone to take time out of their busy day and notice all the beautiful parts of nature. Look at everything in great detail and enjoy every part of your life from the smallest rosebud to the biggest tree giving you shade. What seems small at first can be something great and spectacular. Don’t waste a moment of your time enjoy nature and all its surroundings. Nature has so much to offer yet it so often gets ingored and put to the side for a rainy day. As we go about our busy days we don’t even have time to notice little things. This weekend I went to the mall with my daughter and she asked to go into the art gallery for Pablo Picaso where she pointed at three photos that she wanted me to buy for her room. It was so cute. This piece makes you feel like disappearing into a different place where there is a breeze flowing through your hair and a warm sun on your skin and these beautiful flowers all around.
