Jamie Hewlett Tank Girl

There are many times when the art of an artist is so bold and eye-catching that it will stick with you. You then begin to associate it with certain characteristics- whether it be their use of color, energetic shapes, and/or varied subject matter. Everything about the art is taken into account except for the name of the artist themselves. No one ever stops to think about who made the Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, Ren and Stimpy, etc. Which is a shame really, as many of the creators behind those cartoons have a unique, yet solid voice. One artist that would fit such a description is Jamie Hewlett. Hewlett used pen primarily for these comics which contributed to the gritty look of his art and made his lettering look really chunky, and not really refined. However, he kept this from looking like a mess with his great use of color, which was never too bright, but not subdued to the point of looking muddy either. He did this by using only a small palette of colors for a cover and stuck with it. This helped make sure the colors in his picture didn't clash but still provide a nice spectrum. Hewlett also had a good sense of space and was able to keep everything in the picture in the frame. As mentioned earlier, the way he drew the characters themselves were rather realistic, specifically the proportions of the characters and their facial features. This is rather telling since there's a mutant kangaroo in the comic, as well as other strange beasts. Despite, the way the characters are drawn is believable because Jamie has a solid understanding of anatomy that allows him to draw these beasts, and stylize them the way he wants. As Gorillaz went through many Phases, so did Hewlett's artwork for said Phases. The Phases for the Gorillaz were the time periods in which the art-style for the band members was made apparent, and was accompanied by a new album. For Phases 1 and 2, his artwork was a lot more simplified, which made it easier for the band to translate into animation. The linework for this period is a lot thicker and smoother, with sharp edges, similar to that of a UPA cartoon. His artwork was also much more stylized around this time, experimenting with facial features and proportions. All of the members of Gorillaz come in different shapes and sizes, giving them their own unique look. While 2-D (frontman) and Murdoc (bassist) are both tall and skinny, yet certain features on Murdoc are rounded like his face, hair, and nose. 2-D's features are more angular and pointy. Russell's (the drummer) body is more circular than either of them and has blank white eyes. Noodle is much shorter than the rest of her bandmates and has slanted eyes.
