Jacob Busby: A Short Story
Today has been the worst day ever in the life of Jacob Busby. I have been in a plane crash in the water and I am the only one who survived. I am on a life boat in the middle of the ocean, and all I have is an airline ticket, a glass of champagne, a walking cane, and a blond wig. What am I going to do.(I provided exposition by telling them what happened to the plane today.)

Seven days have passed. There has been no food for days, and I am almost out of champagne. I am feeling tired and I am very sunburned. There is no land In sight. I have tried to paddle with my cane but I get no where. I can only be thankful to God that I am still alive. I pray to God every morning that I find land, or I ask for fish, or rain. Suddenly I felt something wet

I woke up hazed with blurred vision. The right side of my face was dried and burned. The left side of my face was soaked in salt water and blood. I was freaked out and picked up my head and blinked rapidly. I saw nothing but blue for miles and miles, the sky and the water. When I looked down I saw nothing but a small black and orange rubber dingy. I tried to think about what had happened. It was then when I realized I couldn't even remember my own name. Then panic just settled in for some reason I jumped in the water freaking out. I came to my senses and quickly started using all my strength to hurdle myself in the dingy.…

Fish on! Fish on! We were fishing on Eagle Lake Canada and we were headed to our lucky spot by Bird Turd island it is out in the BIG lake. We are fishing on a windy day, we hit a huge 4 foot wave head on and our Crestliner boat capsized. I quickly grabbed my backpack, in my backpack I had a marine radio, a survival kit, sunscreen, and some extra food. We swam to closest island call Bird Turd island. I looked back, all of my belonging were sinking to the bottom of the lake. We were shipwrecked! I was screaming and screaming and screaming for help but no one could hear me. I heard a boat so I screamed so more and no one was there. I was hoping someone was coming. I stayed there for what felt like hours, so I decided to walk around and look at the island. I came across and tiny little shed.…

Jay Gatsby started running booze during prohibition, just like the southerners started running moonshine. You had to have a quick car and a skilled and fast driver to run alcohol in the 1920’s. Both boot legging during prohibition and after in the 30’s and 40’s tie in with Gatsby’s wealth and the start of car racing. Gatsby’s love of expensive and fast cars could have been derived from his old habit of running illegal booze. In fact after Gatsby’s death he gets a call saying one of the men got caught running “shine”. Gatsby was most defiantly connected with the running of alcohol, which contributed to the rise of stock car racing.…

There were some salmon, but if I put them in my knapsack, it will turn bad. I got back to the shelter to grab my knapsack and decided to search for the second shelter, I went along the river, which led me downhill. It was a forest with huge trees, filled with life, but there are still salmon in the river, so I chose that instead. I broke off a branch and stabbed some salmon, I got two, which was plenty. I started a fire near the river to just cook the fish, I didn’t do it near the trees because they might catch fire. There wasn’t a place to take shelter, so I stayed up a tree the whole night, that is a typical…

We were all sucked dry from the sun that day with zero energy left, we scavenged what we could and we still ate better than we could have at any local dinner. The day was still long and was only going to get hotter and longer even as the day came to a close. There was more things to do around the land than there was at any theme park. So as we all sat around and waited for something to do you could tell that everyone was thinking the same thing as sweat poured down all of our faces. The cold spring fed creek was the only thing that was going through my mind and I knew that was the only thing going through anyone else’s. We walked down to the creek as there was no other way that you could reach it, and as we got closer and closer you could hear the light eco of the fifteen foot waterfall coming off of the trees. The only thing I was looking for was the spit of the water flowing up through the large oak and misquote tree branches. You knew when everyone saw the water, you could see the sight of the crystal clear water shining off of everyones eyes and you could tell that there was a sudden sign of relief that came upon everyone after the long walk through the large misquote trees avoiding as many thorns and cactuses as they possibly could, being careful as could be you weren't going to miss all of them. And there was no better feeling than soaking your wounds in that…

Arriving at the river, I abandon discretion and resolve that this morning I’m going to wade wet. With my pulse quickening and clutching my rod and fly pack, I venture forth on a quest for one of my favorite and secluded fishing spots. Covertly slipping into the river before the break of day, I finally relax and in the dim predawn light experience a moment of intimacy with God’s…

I woke up tired on a beautiful, sunny, Tuesday morning. It was the day I had to fly to San Francisco for my job on a cruise ship. I had been in between cruises, so I had taken the chance to come see my parents in Newark, New Jersey. Later I realized that it could have cost me dearly. I changed into my pressed, white, long sleeved shirt with khaki pants and my sailors hat that I had to wear for my job as a deckhand. I arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport a hour before my flight, where I hug my parents goodbye. I walk in and go through security easily and go to my gate and wait for thirty minutes until we would be able to board.…

My grandfather and his older children including my father spent almost a year gathering supplies and building a raft for their Travel. When they completed their raft they gathered few belongings and a week’s supply of food and traveled through the ocean. The first day was the easiest because they had very high hopes and their dream of America was coming true. They didn’t even notice the heat nor the choppy water; to them it seemed like the last bump on the road to a better life. The second day passed just as fast as the first day, but the third day was very different. The third day of their, at best, 5 day journey they woke up and realize that their food, which was on a smaller raft tied to the back of the main raft, was no longer there. To this day they do not know how it happened, they just assume that the waves forced the knot loose and the food drifted away. This was around the time that they started to become fearful for what might happen. The fourth day was when they began to feel intense hunger and fear. On the fifth day they realized that their trip wouldn’t come to an end soon. They realized that the current had slowed them down by at least two more days. At this point, hungry and hopeless,…

The great flaw in Gatsby's character is his excessive obsession. We find out towards the middle of the book Gatsby is obsessed with Daisy to the point that his life is 'Daisy'. He throws extravagant parties in hopes her being there. He purchases a palace of a mansion simply because it is close to Daisy's home. He makes a living only to prove himself worthy to Daisy. He lives for 'Daisy', but he does not live for the living Daisy. Gatsby is so infatuated with 'Daisy' that he is bent on the magnificent fantasy of a Daisy to which no human can compare. He chooses to remain loyal to the young Daisy of eighteen, who was "by far the most popular of all the young girls of Louisville…dressed in white, and had a little white roadster" (Fitzgerald 72-73). In the words of Fitzgerald: "No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up in his ghostly heart" (93). This is very true, as the real Daisy served no other purpose to Gatsby than to bear a faint resemblance to the fantastical angle he had conjured out of his shattered dreams. Neither Gatsby nor anyone can gain anything from such a delusional happiness.…

After hours of sitting out on the dock, my cousins and I were getting tired. So, we decided to see who could catch a fish first, and then we’ll be able to go inside. It took us another hour in order for one of us to catch a fish. During that hour, there was a lot of frustration and yawning. Since we all gave up on trying to find a manatee, we began to bring in all of the plates that were once filled with food and the fishing poles. But, as soon as we started to get everything together, we heard a noise coming from the water that sounded like something was breathing. Well, to our surprise, that was the sea cow we were hoping to see. The sky around us was too dark to see near us, and the tiny lanterns on the dock didn’t help too…
