I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati. After receiving a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University, I have been a professor for roughly six years. I have taught courses in research methods, statistics, and juvenile justice during that time. My main areas of research are in developmental, life-course criminology, juvenile delinquency and juvenile justice, and research methods and statistics. I have led or worked on multiple studies surrounding key juvenile delinquency and juvenile justice issues and have published several papers on related topics. A link to my full academic record is found in the “Course Documents” section of the Blackboard site.
Please feel free to email me with your questions and concerns. Email is likely the best way to contact me during the course. I will also hold a couple of 60-minute office hour sessions (“chats”) during the term. I will post the time and date for each on the Blackboard site and/or send out email notices. These are opportunities to ask questions about the material for the class, the papers, or any information provided in this syllabus. This also provides a good opportunity for you to communicate with me and others who are writing about the same topic, so take advantage of this if you can.
WHAT IS A “SPECIAL TOPICS” COURSE?:
Special topics courses are designed to allow students to probe a topic in greater depth than is possible in a regular class. They are administered like an on-campus “readings course” or “independent study”. You are given the opportunity to read in an area so as to develop your expertise on the topic while writing intensively about it.
COURSE MATERIALS:
You will be required to read a book and several related readings

“Integrity means everything to me. That’s what my father had taught me when I was a young’un. If anyone asked me how I would like to be remembered in the Roller hobby, I would say I want to be remembered as a man of integrity because if you don’t have integrity, you have nothing! After I am gone, if people say I flew some descent Rollers, that would be fine, too. But I would like to be remembered as man of integrity.” This was the reply of James Turner of Greenwood, South Carolina, when asked how he would want to be remembered among the Roller pigeons community.…

    1. There are many environmental forces that changed during Detective Rich Miller’s career. He talks about the veterans complaining about the Miranda warning, and the new emphasis on the exclusionary rules and other changes that gave defense attorneys more leverage in cases. He recalled a senior detective asking why anyone needed anything more than a high school education to do police work. He also included that entry into law enforcement required at least a community college degree, and his department required at least a four-year degree. Promotions to lieutenant and above required a master’s degree. I believe that the change of Miranda warning is a beneficial change because it reminds individuals of their rights before the police are allowed to ask any questions. This is helpful to the person being arrested at the time but can also be a disadvantage to a police officer’s investigation. I believe the change in required education for law enforcement is also beneficial to policing. I think that requiring a minimum education to enter law enforcement will ensure that police officers are prepared and knowledgeable to perform their duties.…

In the book The Jack Roller author Clifford Shaw is a criminologist who has researched many different youthful deviants to see exactly when the deviance begins and how it evolves. The book dives deep into the mind of a particular case of a boy named Stanley in Chicago during the 1920’s. From the beginning of the book Stanley is abused by his stepmother often being set aside so she could tend to here actual children. I believe this book is most accurately depicts the social learning theory. Stanley has been exposed to a multitude of positive outlooks of crime from his family and friends at an extremely young age.…

Before the modern era, youth who committed crimes in the Western world received no preferential treatment because of their age. These children were adjudicated, punished, and confined alongside adult offenders. In more recent years the juvenile justice system has maintained different priorities than those that exist in the adult criminal justice system. However, there are still many get tough advocates of law and order, many of whom are fed up with violent juvenile crime, that are increasingly questioning the philosophy that underlies the juvenile justice system in America. Many people call for harsher punishments while others call for better rehabilitation programs for youth offenders. This paper will focus on the differences between the adult and juvenile justice systems, and whether rehabilitation or incarceration is the best method to assist in reducing the juvenile crime rate and help today’s youth become contributing members of society.…
