Critical and creative thinking skills are a must when you have a family with two working parents and two children. This past year my wife and I have had to become very creative with our budgeting to keep our family on a clear financial track. Raising a family can be tricky for anyone but when financial problems unexpectedly arise it really throws a curve ball in the mix. We had to do some quick thinking and come up with some unusual methods to keep our family on track with the holidays quickly approaching. We used creative thinking to look around for the ideas and critical thinking to put those creative ideas out and decide which ones would work best for our situation.
Last October with very little warning I lost my job. Now since my wife only works part time, I am the major bread winner in our family. My job supplies our money for our monthly bills, our health insurance and our life insurance. My wife’s paycheck is more for spending money and savings. However, our savings was extremely low because we had just purchased a new home a couple months before and had to make two unexpected trips home to Illinois within three weeks the month before because of illness in the family. When I came home and told my wife I was losing my job she was definitely extremely worried. We had to come up with a plan to keep our financial heads above water and quick.
First we sat down and went over each and every expense in our household. We took out the ones we didn’t really need such as extra internet fees and clothing allowances for the next couple of months. These were just luxuries and our clothing was fine for now. We wanted to try our best for now to keep the kids’ lives minimally changed.
Next we looked at ways to make extra income while I was unemployed. I am an IT security engineer so we knew that more than likely I would not be

If I could start a business I would start a lawn care and services business because I enjoy gardening, working outside. With a lawn care service it is a stable and a repeat business, for the customer that do not have time or just do not want to do there on lawn. For those customers from late spring the early Fall they will need their lawns mowed once a week, making for a stable business. There will be some challenge in starting this business, lawn care has many competitors. Just by doing a web search for lawn care services there were multiple pages some are well known and others are may you of one or two persons. Then there is the expenses of starting up, equipment and a way transport the equipment insurance on vehicles, equipment and employees. Also insurance that would cover damages that may occur during your services. During the startup customer base may be low, because people do not know the company. The strategies for overcoming these challenges would be to start with a good business plan, with doing this I would ask for help from people successful in business. There are many websites one of them is SBA.GOV which is the U.S. Small Business Administration. As for obtaining a customer base, advertisement with the use of social media and creating a website, use Craigslist attend lawn and garden show and pass out flyers and business card, make use of Groupon. Based on the business plan if it would be a good idea to purchasing an existing business, this could provide both customer base and equipment. Also for the customer base I would place bids on city property that had to be taken care of and contact with other small business owners. The desired outcome of this would be to provide a service that is needed and own a business that is well known and respected. That the business would grow from a small to a medium size company and never lose site customer relationships and customer satisfaction.…

One of my adult children was always coming up short for one thing or another, and would invariably ask “Mom can I borrow some money until next pay day?” The third time this occurred I agreed to loan the funds on the condition that she sit down with me and create a budget, and further, that she save the receipts for all of her expenditures for one month. It was really an eye opener for her. (She was spending around $200.00 a month on soda pop alone.) She started her budget about three years ago and has not had to borrow since……

These two job scenarios were a rude awakening and I realized that we should not always get to comfortable at a job or jump so quickly into a new one. Shortly after being jobless for the second time around in the same year I had low spirits, nothing going for myself, I just simply didn’t want to do anything. I lost myself. One day I met up with one of close friends and wow did she ever lecture me, but the words that gave me comfort were “Everything will turn out all right”. These small, simple words turn things around for me. I’ve always heard people say it but never put too much thought into…

There are consequences for having inadequate savings for families. If your monetary personality is reckless, that could potentially be the cause of your children not having sufficient clothes, food, or housing. Saving money should not start right when you have the kid but beforehand. If you save in advance, you will be more prepared for when your child comes along and you are able to provide them with the necessities. The saving will lead you to have even some extra money saved up and then if you have an accident or your child has an accident then you are able to pay the money for the hospital bill. You can also have money saved up for future expenses for your child such as a car or school…

This paper observes articles that analyze the outcome of families and how they manage their money in a tough economical time; the articles also show the things that are necessary with the rising of pricing and the toll it’ll take on a marriage. (Brown 2009) suggest joint accounts make it harder to keep track of money with the high prices, radical spending and the ease of two incomes available at all times. While on the other hand (Henry 2012) proposed that having a joint account is the best way to go having more than one account and is worst to keep track. Leading us into another important factor budgeting with children (Lock 2011) Stating that if a middle class family spent what a lower class family spent on their children they would save a lot more money annually. (Blanchard 2009) Leads the argument in stating how you can cut down on household cost by changing the high costing habits that are hard to overcome.…

Reassess your savings goals. Subtract your expenses (the ones you can't live without) from your take-home income (i.e. after taxes have been taken out). What is the difference? And does it match up with your savings goals? Let's say you've decided you can definitely get by on $150 per month, and your paychecks amount to $230 per month. That leaves you with $80 to save. If there’s absolutely no way you can fit all your savings goals into your budget, take a look at what you’re saving for and cut the less important things or adjust the time-frame. Maybe you need to put off Make a budget. Once you’ve managed to balance your earnings with your savings goals and spending, write down a budget so you’ll know each month or each paycheck how much you can spend on any given thing or category of things. This is especially important for expenses which tend to fluctuate, or which you know you're going to have a…
