Inferno Written by Dante Alighieri, Inferno is one of the three works that make up The Divine Comedy. The Divine Comedy documents Dante’s travels through Hell (in Inferno), Purgatory (in Purgatorio), and Heaven (in Paradiso). The Divine Comedy helped to establish the roots of what is now the Italian language, as Dante wrote in the Italian vernacular instead of Latin, making his work more accessible to the lower, uneducated classes and establishing a trend of writing in common language. In Inferno, a lion, a leopard, and a she-wolf corner Dante in a dark wood. Dante is unable to find a way to escape these animal assailants, and begins to give up hope. However, Virgil appears and offers to

They progress throughout the ditches conversing with various damned souls, such as Guido da Montefeltro, Mohammed, and Odysseus. Finally, the two make it to the end of the eighth circle and the pair descend down the giants well to the realm of the traitors, the frozen river Cocytus into the region called Caina. The poets talk to several notorious traitors, such as Camiscion de’Pazzi and Bocca degli Abati, before plunging even deeper towards the center of the earth, where Lucifer resides. The poets encounter Satan, who has three heads, each one chewing a sinner who has betrayed his benefactor. One head holds Brutus, another Cassius, and the third chews Judas Iscariot. At last, Virgil decides that Dante has seen enough of Hell, saying: “But night is rising, it’s time to leave for Hell has nothing more for us to see.” (34.68). The two climb across the Devil himself, and emerge after much traveling into the daylight. Dante’s Inferno is an epic poem chronicling Dante and Virgil’s journey throughout the depths of the underworld, observing every facet of Hell, every level of sin and it’s corresponding punishment. The deeper the poets venture into the Earth, the more heinous the crimes become. Finally, the poets encounter Satan, who himself punishes traitors, whose crimes are considered the most lowly. Dante uses the circles of Hell to discourage his readers from

Dante and Virgil reach the final circle of Hell where traitors who betray their masters are tormented. Lucifer sits half frozen in the ice with three heads and three sets of bat-like wings that beat and keep the lake frozen below. In each of his mouths sits Judas, Brutus, and Cassius, who are considered by Dante to be the worst traitors. The deceased are frozen in the ice to varying degrees depending on how great their sin was. Virgil carries Dante as they descend down the devil’s torso and onto the ice. They then leave through an opening in the rock and begin their ascent out of Hell. The two of them follow the treacherous path through the center of the Earth and past a river before coming out the tunnel on the other side of the Earth and…

The first of three books in the Divine Comedy trilogy, “Dante's Inferno” is an epic poem separated into numbered stanzas categorized in cantos. The story begins with the protagonist dante on earth coming out of the woods when he comes across a beautiful mountain. When he tries to climb the mountain he is stopped by three beasts; a leopard representing the sin of lack of self control, a lion representing violent sin, and a wolf representing sins of fraud. Each animal was a representation of dante's own sins and the mountain was a representation of heaven. Because dantes “sins” wouldn't allow him into “heaven” he had no choice but to leave. Soon after he meets a spirit in the woods by the name of Virgil, he was a dead poet and dante was a huge…

Dante does not want to respect the sinners anymore, but decides to add to their brutal punishment. Dante then journeys to Antenora, where he finds Ruggieri and Ugolino. They plotted together and earned themselves a place in Antenora. Ruggieri starved Ugolino and his sons. When they both arrived in Hell Ruggieri became Ugolino’s aliment. Dante describes Ruggieri as making “a helmet” (XXXII.126) for Ugolino, as he gnaws at his nape. They are pinched in the ice and can barely move. Dante then progresses to the last layer of Cocytus, Ptolomea. Here are the treacherous to guests and hosts. He finds Friar Alberigo. He was banished to Hell before he died, and a demon inhabited his body. He lays on his back with only his face showing. His tears freeze his eyelids and seal them shut. He poisoned his relatives at a banquet, for revenge. Dante wants to help the Friar, however he does not feel like he does not deserve his punishment. He promises that if he speaks his name, he will help him relieve the pain of his frozen tears. If he does not sooth his agony, he will “ descend to the last rim of the ice” (XXXIII. 117). Dante exposes the sinners’ nature, they are no longer the innocent prey for the demons, but…

Inferno talks about people and how they chose their fate. The story is about Dante's view of hell. Dante believed hell had 9 layers. Each canto tells of the 9 layers and where a person of sin will dwell due to the choices they made in life. For example, in Canto XXXIV (9), it tells of Satan's fate. “And there before them, in an infernal parody of Godhead, they see Satan in the distance, his great wings beating like a windmill.”It also reads, “He is fixed into the ice at the center to which flow all the rivers of guilt; and as he beats his great wings as if to escape, their icy wind only freezes him more surely into the polluted ice.” The more he flaps his wings to try and escape, the more it forces him to be stuck where he is. His destiny is to to be stuck experiencing all of the guilt in the world due to his own actions.…

When reading the Divine Comedy, one realizes that the Middle Ages, as far as they may be, they preserve a reality so close to us that one remains amazed. The question that arises naturally is whether it is Dante, that looks forward and is therefore able to make us conscious of our past and consequently relate the Comedy to a present state, or whether it is the context, the popular culture that revolved around the late Middle Ages, that arise in us latent feelings. To be able to answer well to this question one must read carefully the Comedy and realize which points intersect with the Medieval culture absorbed by Dante, and which other points are personal reflections and studies of outer influence. It is obviously arguable that Dante incorporated both Medieval influences to a personal interpretation of facts, but it is interesting to notice how far geographically and spatially did Dante go in his research to the completion of the Divine Comedy. Geography and time are two important factors that determine the completion of Dante 's thought, he not only relates to a specific period of time, but also to a specific geography, although the history of Dante 's thought show us how his geographical perimeters and his time spans may be a lot different from his Medieval counterparts.…

The Inferno was part of the three-part poem called The Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri. Dante, who lived from 1265 to 1321, was born in Florence to a middle class family and grew up during the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance. While Dante was away on a diplomatic trip, the Black Guelfs took over Florence and banished Dante from the city. During his life in exile, Dante wrote the epic poem The Divine Comedy and finished it shortly before his death. The nine circles of Hell were constructed by Dante, and as one went down the levels, the punishment increases. Dante places the Virtuous Pagans justly because the only suffering they should feel is the longing for God and earned the rights to live in a dignified environment.…

In The Inferno - Dante’s Immortal Drama of a Journey Through Hell, Dante allows the reader to experience his every move. His mastery of language, his sensitivity to the sights and sounds of nature, and his infinite store of knowledge allow him to capture and draw the reader into the realm of the terrestrial hell. In Canto 6, the Gluttons; Canto 13, the Violent Against Themselves; and Canto 23, the Hypocrites; Dante excels in his detailed portrayal of the supernatural world of hell. In each canto, Dante combines his mastery of language with his sensitivity to the sights and sounds of nature to set the stage. He then reinforces the image with examples that call upon his infinite store of knowledge, and thus draw a parallel that describes the experience in a further, although more subliminal, detail to the reader.…

Each animals represents a flaw found within every person to a certain degree, the leopard representing lust, the lion symbolizing pride, and the she-wolf signifying greed. Each of these humanistic characteristics blocks Dante from the morning light, an allegory for the path to god. Under the scope of Arnold’s definition, the truth and seriousness within this one line of Dante’s epic speaks to the nature of all of humanity. The essence of Arnold’s argument to highlight the poets who he believes to be the standard of literature, poetry such as The Inferno that inspires and has some sort of moral…

Inferno section 1: Dante's journey through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio), and Heaven (Paradiso) takes place in 1300, at the midpoint of his life. Dante sets himself as the narrator and main character of this epic poem. His flight through Hell begins in a dark and unknown forest. As Dante wanders through the woods he comes to a hill above which shines the first sunlight that he has encountered in the forest. But as Dante begins to climb the hill a leopard blocks his path. As Dante retreats, a lion and a she-wolf join the leopard in driving Dante back into the dark valley. Rushing terrified down the hill Dante encounters a shadowy figure. The figure reveals itself to be the spirit of Virgil, the master poet from Mantua who lived during the reign of Julius Caesar, before the coming of Christ. Directing Dante to take a path around the beasts on the hillside, Virgil becomes Dante's teacher and guide through Hell and parts of Purgatory.…

Dante Alighieri wrote The Divine Comedy, an epic poem which was split into three parts: The Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Paradise). The Divine Comedy is a religious allegory, which teaches a moral lesson. The Inferno is a telling of Dante’s journey through the nine circles of Hell. He begins his journey through Hell on Good Friday and ends on Easter Sunday. This symbolizes the journey of Jesus, crucified on Good Friday, where he descended into Hell and resurrected to live again on Easter Sunday. The Divine Comedy was written when Dante was going through a rough stage in life. The Roman Catholic Church abandoned and tossed aside Dante where he was now “lost,”questioning his experience in faith. The moral lesson of Dante’s…

So begins the Inferno. Dante realizes he has wandered from the "True Way" in mid-life, and finds himself in the Valley of Evil. He is rescued by the spirit of Virgil (author of the Aeneid), who tells him he has been sent to guide him out of Hell because of prayers by Beatrice, the woman whom Dante admired all his life. To leave Hell, they must go through all nine circles of Hell, the deeper the circle, the more grave the sin and its appropriate punishment. Perhaps the worst punishment is that no one helps or cares for another in Hell. By going through Hell, Dante - and the reader - learn to recognize and detest man's sinful nature and the power of evil, and the need to guard against it. Dante learns those in Hell choose to go there by their unrepentance. Dante enters Hell on Good Friday and reads the following posted above the gates of Hell as he is about to enter (Canto III, line 9):…

Venturing through the very depths of hell, Dante the pilgrim bears witness to the various consequences of the sins that humans have committed on earth. Sin, as defined in the bible is the deliberate disobedience to the will of God. These deliberate actions serve to disrupt the balance that is the guiding principle in the final judgment and all of hell. Although warped by Dante’s personal life experiences, hell in theory is just because it is based on the Bible and the essential teachings of God. Hell is organized according to Dante the writer’s perception of God’s teaching as well as his philosophical understanding of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics making it both just and logical, but it causes Dante the pilgrim to question the nature of punishment in many of these circles.…
