Is Abortion Murder or a Life-Saver?
Late one night a young woman was walking home from work when a man approached her then raped her. Soon after, she discovered that he impregnated her. She felt that abortion was the only choice because living with the constant reminder of what had happened to her was too much to handle. Also she knew that she wouldn’t be able to love or treat it the way it should be loved or treated. Physician Felicia H. Stewart and economist James Trussell estimated that 333,000 assaults and rapes reported in the US in 1998 caused about 25,000 pregnancies. (Wikipedia) People come up with all kinds of excuses when their lives become more difficult so that they can take the easier way out. Unfortunately with abortion there is no easy way out. No matter what decisions are made someone is going to get hurt; may be the mother, the father or perhaps it’s the baby that will have to pay for its parents stupidities. Abortion should only be a last resort in cases like rape or being too sick to actually give birth. If the child will be mistreated or unloved, adoption is always an option. It’s the mother’s decision since it is her body and her life. Even in some of these cases abortion is not okay because adoption is always available if you cannot handle a child. Everyone has their own opinions and mine is that I’m “Pro-Choice”. Meaning that I’m not fully against abortion, but I’m not fully for it. I believe that it’s your own decision what happens to your child.
According to State Health Facts.org, 17% of people in the United States that have had an abortion have been under the age of nineteen. Often times people at this young age feel that they are not quite ready to give birth to and take care of a whole other human being. Other times parents get involved, not allowing their children to have abortions and allowing their children to have abortions and decide to raise the child as their own which causes them unnecessary stress that may reflect on the child’s upbringing. Every so often a child is consumed because of an unfortunate event where a woman has been raped. “The national rape-related pregnancy rate is 5% per rape among victims of reproductive age (12 to 45); among adult women an estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year.” This is why I believe that in certain cases the circumstances vary and should be taken into serious consideration. It is in fact murder, but sometimes abortion can be the better option.
When a child that is unwanted is born, occasionally it will end up being mistreated, unloved or abused. A child that is neglected by its parents won’t be able to grow up and become a healthy, happy adult. “Every year over three million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving nearly six million children.”(Childhelp) Neglect causes 78.3 % of all child abuse. Just the feeling of being unloved can cause that child to make choices that could hurt themselves or others around them. This is why I’m pro-choice. I’m not totally against abortion (pro-life), but I am also not fully for abortion. I believe that it all depends on the kind of environment the child will be born into.
Often times some women who are pregnant abort their child so that they don’t “look bad”. Many women decide that they do not want to have a child because of all the side effects and difficulties that go along with child birth. Other women have abortions because they are sick or unhealthy and don’t want to pass it down to the child. Being pro-choice in this case makes me think that these women are making this choice with haste and not thinking about the long term consequences. Being pro-choice also makes me think that they are making the right choice for their own lives by thinking about what’s best for them over what’s best for them over what’s best for the child.
Some women feel that if they don’t have an abortion the child may have to be put in an orphanage because she can’t afford to take care of them. Over five hundred thousand children were in the U.S. foster care system on September 30th, 2005. (Foster Care Alumni) These children could have been adopted and always wonder if they weren’t good enough or will stay in the orphanage, unloved and unwanted; neither of these options all appealing to young parents. The thought of not being able to provide for their child scares them and causes them to feel that abortion is a better answer. This feeling isn’t unusual, many women feel this way. They think about the up sides to giving their child up for adoption instead of abortion such as getting the chance to watch them grow up and having a good life.
People make decisions based on what they believe will be the easiest but abortion is not a matter to be taken lightly. It takes time to decide what is best for everyone that it will affect. Often times women aren’t ready to have and to provide for a child so they abort it. Many women have abortions because of an unwanted child cause by rape, but even in terrible cases like rape if you cannot handle keeping the child adoption is always a better option than abortion. On the other hand, a child that will be unwanted, unloved, mistreated or abused should be placed in a safe environment whether that means it’s actually born or not. Some people might call it selfish but it’s the mother’s choice since it is her life, her body and her unborn child. Perhaps a woman is too sick for a child birth and will die unless she has an abortion. 25% of women who have abortions do it because they are homeless and can’t afford children. In some cases I believe abortion is wrong but in other cases I think it’s the better choice. This is why I’m pro-choice, meaning I’m not fully against abortion and I’m also not fully for it. I believe it’s your life therefor, your choices.

Abortion is an on-going debate throughout the United States. Americans divide 50% as pro-choice and 44% on pro-life. (Saad, 2015) Majority of women side with pro-choice, and being a woman myself, I stand with pro-choice. I believe that it’s an individual’s right to decide what they’re doing to their bodies, and no one else should be allowed to deny them of said right. There are many different reasons as to why someone would get an abortion. Whether it be from results of rape, birth control failure, teen pregnancy, or whatever the case may be, every abortion is thought out and no option is an easy option.…

After an abortion the mother is more likely to start abusing drugs and alcohol. Also some women try to commit suicide. With this procedure the mother's life is also in danger. There have been mothers that have died because of abortions. Twenty-one percent of all pregnancies end in abortion. In 2011, 1.06 million abortions were performed, down 13% from 1.21 million in 2008. From 1973 through 2011, nearly 53 million legal abortions occurred. Each year, 1.7% of women ages from 15 to 44 have an abortion. Eighteen percent of U.S. women obtaining abortions are teenagers; those aged 15–17 obtain 6% of all abortions, 18–19-year-olds obtain 11%, and teens younger than 15 obtain 0.4%. The debate on abortion is one that still to this day has been constantly argued. This argument can be historically dated back to 1973, where a popular case was brought into the Supreme Court. This was the Roe V Wade case, which legalized abortions in “abortion in earlier months of pregnancy without restrictions and with restrictions in later months” (Lewis). Jane Roe was the alias for Norma McCorvery. She was the one arguing that in Texas there should be abortions allowed due to the protection of her rights as well as many other women that she was speaking for. The argument of abortion, however, works well beyond just the “rights” of the women wanting it. There is death involved as well as responsibilities that apparently many women aren’t ready for. However there are certain circumstances in which the pregnancy might not have been exactly planned or the child wouldn’t be safe in the living conditions of its parents. In this case, abortion should still not be looked at instead adoption should be thought about. The Roe V Wade case should be reconsidered to only have an abortion done if it was absolutely vital to the person asking for it.…

In regards of “bad” lifestyles, many people ask, “What if a women is raped?” In that case, abortion is still not justified. The father can chose if he wants to be in or out of the child’s’ life. Although he may rape again, he should still have the legal power to fight for custody. Every child needs a mother and a father to grow up well rounded. In the instance of a rape, if the parents do not want their child knowing the reason for their existence, they can choose to keep in a secret.…

A group of feminists one day decided to get together and create a band to speak out against the injustice toward women, kids, blacks and American Indians. These women saw a world filled violence and cruelty. But and here is the big but “Abortion” one of these women referred to it as an atrocity forced upon women by a male dominated society. They also saw a very real connection between denying personhood and basic human rights to women and others and denying these same rights to unborn children. To accept abortion, they felt would be to continue the tragic and unjust cycle of violence. So I wonder if a women was or has been raped and she gets pregnant should she keep the baby, but why would she do that, yes I agree that a child is a blessing when it is wanted but how about when he is not, how about when a teenager gets pregnant shall she stop all of her dreams to become a mommy.…

I learned that one excuse people use to justify is rape. Well I looked the statistics up and two to five percent of rape victims end up pregnant, and that is if they go and report the crime so a doctor can clean them out with a rape kit. And if this is the situation then they can simply give the baby to someone who does want kids like my aunt and many other women who would and will love the baby. When I read in high detail this next part I could not stop crying, because of the horror of it all and the evil that a person must be, to do this. Pro-choice never explains to anyone about the “fetus” moving around trying to get away from the instruments doctors’ use when they perform an abortion. The doctors that do this for a living and know the practice like the back of their hand never tell women about the baby pushing away from the probes they use while murdering them or the way the baby fights with all the strength he has until his death. This is how bad our society has gotten, because the mother’s womb is supposed to be the safest place for a child. Well even in there some babies are faced with the fear of their innocent…

52% of women under the age of 25 are guilty of having an abortion. Young women getting an abortion do not have enough life experience to fully understand what they are doing. This ends in the result of long life regret. Abortion often causes intense psychological pain and stress. Those at such a young age are too naïve to see that abortion is not a contraceptive. Women need to take responsibility for their actions and not getting rid of their problems. It is simply ending the life of an innocent child for their own Irresponsibility. The child is not the one who should be punished. Not only will choosing abortion lead to psychological pain but it also can increase ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage and pelvic inflammatory disease.…

I recently saw a video of a 20-year-old woman describing her abortion experience. At 15, she had a boyfriend and completely supported woman’s rights to decide the fate of her child. All of that changed after she discovered she was pregnant. Her boyfriend said that he would back out unless she got rid of it. She was also pressured with the fact that she had no money and hadn't finished high school yet. In closing of the video, she lives with the guilt of her decision and is now totally pro-life.…

Abortion is never an easy decision, in fact its one of America's most controversial issues in today's reality, but women have none the less been making that choice for thousands of years. Studies show that about 43% of American women will have one or more abortions during their lifetime, and women's centers and hospitals perform more than a million abortions on an annual basis. Women have many reasons for not wanting to be pregnant including age, marital status, economic status, and the circumstances of their pregnancy, and thus seek out an abortion. Although many citizens view abortion as an immoral act of brutality and strongly contest its usage, others believe the choice belongs solely to the mother and the mother alone.…

In some cases the victim falls pregnant, what is she supposed to do next? Either have an abortion or continue with the pregnancy and after birth give the child up for adoption. ‘Adoption is never an alternative for abortion’. What if that child never gets adopted as they will have that stigma following them of being a child born as a consequence of a rape? That mother will always blame herself, for the mistake committed by a man she never knew.…

A woman feels that she has authority to do what she wants with her body. Some of these women feel that they are not ready to take on the role of motherhood, have the financial means to raise the child, or have the support by a spouse or family members. In other cases, rape or incest resulted in a pregnancy that was not done willingly by the woman involved. These sets of women are those who look at abortion as a sense of redemption from the situation that they were put in. In other words, a quick fix is something they’re in search of. In the eyes of our society, it is stated that is just as much of the woman’s fault as is the man’s because they feel women contribute to the possibility of being raped whether it be by the way they dress or the environment they put their selves in. Victims in this situation feel as if they are at fault and put all the blame upon them which raises the chances of an…

Up to six million pregnancies occur every year. More than half of those pregnancies not planned. Of those women who have an unplanned pregnancy 50% were using a form of contraception when they conceived. About 74% of women surveyed who have had an abortion said that to have a baby at that time in their lives would dramatically change their live. Another 48% said they did not want to be a single mother, or there were problems in their relationships. Interfering with work was another 38% and the same percentage for education. 32% said they could not care for another child. A large 73% of women surveyed said they could not afford to have a baby (Stacey, 2010). A point of interest is a small 1% of women said the abortion was because of a forced sexual encounter (Westside Pregnancy Clinic, 2009). For whatever reason a woman chooses to have an abortion, women have her…

Ever since the idea/decision of abortion there has been arguments if it is moral are not. Very many people are strongly against it and state very good information on why but I'm pro abortion. I'm pro abortion because first of all it should really be up to women if its legal or not because its their bodies that have to go through the process of fetal extraction. There are some circumstances in which an abortion is needed. Lets say a high school couple happens to get pregnant they're not very capable to take care of a baby and be parents. A baby would compound the already existing problems a teen already has like school, sports, getting ready for college. Thats not life for a baby especially an unwanted one, what kind of quality of life is that for the baby or parents. What if the expectant parents of that baby aren't fit to be parents having problems with drugs and alcohol no one should grow up around that. If the baby did it could possibly follow in the corrupt footsteps of its failing parents and end up doing the same things. If women are forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term the result is unwanted children which then when they grow up are at a disadvantage, and sometimes inclined toward brutal behavior to others. Now even God forbid let's say some woman had been raped and she has gotten pregnant because of that, she is probably going to want an abortion. This may sound vulgar and mean but what women would want to keep that baby and look at him or her and every day and be reminded of that time where she was highly helpless and being taken advantage of. No one should have to keep reliving that moment over and over again that would be very traumatic. Now the big problems why abortion should be legal came out in the 1973 case of Roe vs Wade. This case came along after women started having behind the scenes abortions where women had it done by coat hangers and dirty instruments to perform these highly dangerous procedures usually done on…

    Moral Theory on Abortion

    • 352 Words

After hearing a criticism of abortion by Don Marquis, and a defense of it by Judith Thomson I still haven’t changed my opinion on how I feel about it. I did enjoy the insight brought forward by both Marquis and Thomson, and the analogies, but the fact is I am prochoice with abortion, and that is where I stand with the issue. I am prochoice partially because I am not very religious and I don’t allow that to sway my decision. Not to mention the fact you brought up in class how a lot of very conservative Christians tend to neglect what the Bible says about it in the 21st chapter of Exodus, “the Law of Israel commands a penalty of death for murder but only a fine for causing a pregnant woman to have a miscarriage.” Besides the fact that I don’t allow religion to play a role in abortion, I personally don’t think men have any say so on the issue at all. After all they don’t have to deal with any part of a pregnancy other than for moral support, and of course if they want to keep the child or not. As far as abortion involving rape I think it is strictly up to the woman whether or not they would like to keep it, but I would assume in most cases considering it is unplanned I would doubt the likelihood of a mother wanting to keep the child of a rapist. As far as late abortions it really starts becoming a bit of a complicated issue, but it sounds like there are already a lot of state laws regarding up to when a woman can have one. I think the average is up to 25 weeks depending on the state. In conclusion I am prochoice, because why should anyone decide whether or not they want to keep the child besides the mother, and father? This isn’t up to some politician or a conservative religious person it should be up to whoever’s body it…

Due to unwanted pregnancies and financial distress, many children are often mistreated and neglected which leads to the idea of abortion as the right decision. Mistreatment and neglect to the child may occur from the mother because the child resembles his or her father, which will be a continuous reminder of what happened (Meehan, Mary 1). It is also not right for a woman to have to go through full-term pregnancy with a child that has been conceived through rape (Maheen, Mary 3). Abortion is necessary for women who have fallen victim to rape or for women who are not financially able to support a family.…
