Arab Americans are being treated unfairly and they should fight like African Americans before them for freedom against discrimination; America has a history of fearing what it does not know which is why it forces others that do not fit their accepted norm to accept their ideas and laws. Arab Americans should fight for freedom against discrimination to show America that it is ok for them to open themselves to new ideas and new people.
Many factors contribute to the mistreatment of Arab Americans in the United States, but particular events have occurred in America that increased and enraged theses feelings in many. Discrimination primarily stems from lack of understanding of a particular culture or group. If there is more awareness, not just about Arab Americans, but about different cultures in general, then we can prosper and become an even stronger nation. With better understanding by all Americans, Arab Americans may benefit by having a voice, and worry less about defending their identities, ancestries, cultures or traditions and focus more on themselves as individuals.
The racialized identification of Muslims and Arab Americans as "terrorists" has not gone unnoticed. In a 1997 report, Maurice Glele-Ahanzano, the United Nations' special reporter on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related phenomena, noted racism and discrimination against Arabs in the U.S. and highlighted the media's tendency to identify Arabs and Muslims with terrorists. In 1999 a bipartisan coalition in Congress sponsored a resolution condemning "anti-Muslim intolerance and discrimination," urging recognition that "organizations that foster such intolerance create an atmosphere of hatred" and noting that law enforcement agencies should avoid the "rush to judgment" that followed the Oklahoma City bombing. However, just before Congress adjourned, the bill was effectively gutted and pulled off the calendar. Discouraged, James Zogby, president of the Arab

As of now, those who don’t opt in for organ donation are presumed to not want to donate. “Presume content” is the name of the new proposal to change the original system. Even today, in the year 2006, the American government along with its people is culturally prejudiced. The most recent display of these injustices has occurred since September 11, 2000. After an attack on American soil by al-Qaeda, Arab Americans have been racially profiled intensely. Quoted in the New York Times, Azhar Usman (a burly American-born Muslim with a heavy black beard) states “he elicits an almost universal reaction when he boards an airplane at any United States airport: conversations stop in mid-sentence and the look in the eyes of his fellow passengers says, ‘We're all going to die!’” (Macfarquhar, NY Times 2006). Similar to Japanese Americans, Arab Americans can be easily identified therefore making it easier to…

Frequently mentioned in the news, the death toll in the Iraq War or suicide bombings contribute to the rise in fear that resides in Americans.. The head of the U.S Commission of Civil Rights, Peter Kirsanow, believes internment camps have a possibility of making a comeback especially if danger posed towards the Arab-Americans escalate. Arab-Americans would be much safer inside internment camps since they won’t be subjected to public humiliation or hate crimes. On the other hand, they would be forced to feel like they are not being treated as an equal. World War II resulted in 40,000 to 1,000,000 Iraqi civilian deaths which, compared to American’s deaths, is more drastic. The image of suicide bombers used by the media is a popular propaganda. The rates portrayed by the media of those that actually do participate in suicide bombings to be larger than they really are. The numbers of Arabs that do participate in suicide bombings, or bombing in general, are marginal compared to the rest of the…

According to Lahav Harkov, who wrote the article called, “Affirmative Action Bill for Arabs Goes to a Vote” stated, “a bill that would give Arabs who perform national-civilian service or serve in the IDF preference in government hiring and university acceptance is going to a Ministerial Committee for Legislation vote on Sunday.” This is extremely crucial because it states that Affirmative action is not only taking place in the United States, but also in other countries like Saudi Arabia. Another important Article might be this one called, “Behind the veil: The racism of Princeton’s affirmative action,” and it stated, “There’s no perfectly equitable admissions model. But a need-based, race-blind policy comes closer to leveling the playing fields of the disparate backgrounds of the candidate pools than the current practice. Such a policy would avoid the objectionable use of racial quotas while achieving the University’s goal of promoting socioeconomic equality among its disadvantaged applicants.” This article is extremely crucial since it is against affirmative action since it just want to create a system to forget race and go blind on admission relying only on the academics report sheet, but I must also say that if this is true then every other case fighting for Affirmative Action will be nothing if something like this happens, which is why this is an extremely crucial piece of…

This is imperative to comprehend that the events have vastly affected American society in many different ways; statistics show the average American has little to no contact with Muslims on a day to day basis (Ghazali). The government classifies Arab Americans as ‘white’ but popular U.S discourses tend to represent Arabs as ‘different from and inferior’ to whites (Amaney). The fact that the country’s opinion has been so sharply altered and their opinions drastically shaped on the feeling towards Muslims solely based on the principle of ‘guilt by association’ is central to this…

Discrimination in America has never been condemned like today, but how did the country change from a place where discrimination was a part of every day’s life to a place where discrimination is not encouraged by many. Unfortunately, African Americans have been the ones who have suffered the most from discrimination mainly because of the type of their skin. The Civil Rights is the moment when African Americans could finally achieve what their forefathers had been promised a Century ago. To achieve these people had to sacrifice their lives, the sages were not wrong when they uttered the proverb no pain no gain.…

The land that these immigrants are coming from is universally known as most dangerous and opposed to the United States. When dating all the way back to the 9/11 tragedy and ever since, peoples of all the Arab heritages have had the same negative stigma and stereotype following them around globally. While yes, terrorist and all of the brutal attacks that have been performed by them were identified with Arabic descent people, not all Arabic peoples are terrorist themselves. Instead, most of these Arabic people are political and religious slaves to their own countries and their terrorism tactic aspiring governments. These same people who were, and still are being forced out of their homelands due to political and religious disputes and almost aspiring genocides, these “Arab immigrants soon found out that the land of opportunity was also strewn with hardship and an ‘unwelcome’ mat” ( Suleiman 504 ). This universally default and used, misunderstood, and inhumane stereotype of all Arab people being of terrorist nature, was persisted and reemphasized throughout the entire movie though multiple, most Arabic racist scene examples. The first example that set up this negative stereotyping, and instantly classifying tone for the rest of the movie, was the scene where Muna and Fadi get held up at immigration lock up for about three hours for questioning. This questioning ranged from them carrying prohibited products, to drugs, to weapons ( Amreeka ). Although it was obvious that a middle-aged mother, and her adolescent son were not posing an endangerment to anyone, they still had to go through that entire procedure because of their Arabic ethnicity. Another, very prejudice and stereotyping scene was when Muna went to a job interview, and instead of going through that interview, the boss…

In this day and age, racism and hate crimes are still huge throughout the world, especially in America. One of the groups discriminated against in America and Europe are Muslims and other Arab groups. Many Muslims were targeted, murdered, discriminated against, and have been considered “terrorists” since the 9/11 attack in 2001; many of these people were thought to be linked with Arab extremist groups and have lost their lives because of this. An example of discrimination closer to 2016 is the refusal of many people to help Syrian refugees hide and have protection from their own government. In World History, these people refusing to help would’ve learned that there are few countries in the Middle East and Asia that have been linked to any extreme groups in this area. There is a multitude of Arabs who do not agree with their governments and wish to escape in all of their willpower. People need to realize that not everyone…

The reason behind this is because these are the races that are discriminated against the most. In my opinion everyone faces some type of racial disparity African Americans face it the most. I feel as though after the terrible events on 9/11, Arabic’s were being discriminated and judged because of their ethnicity. We are in a world where stereotyping has been a continuing factor. There are many factors that will help operate this policy to combat racial disparity and discrimination.…

    Stereotypes on Terrorists

    • 783 Words
    • 4 Pages

There is currently a stereotype in our society which causes us to classify arab and muslim men as terrorist. Though not many people are arrogant enough to repeat John Cooksey’s racist remark after 9/11 attacks that “If I see someone come in and he's got a diaper on his head and a fan belt around that diaper on his head, that guy needs to be pulled over and checked," the vast number of north American’s do still have a stereotype in mind when we imagine terrorists and that is a man of arab descent. Stereotypes are there for a reason, after all both of the people responsible for the previous Boston bombing’s were arab, so is the former most wanted man Osama Bin Laden, and all 16 men who were part of the 9/11 attacks were arab.…

By supporting racial profiling we are supporting racism, and by supporting racism, we are supporting hate. As this practice is becoming common procedure, entire groups of people are being discriminated against. This erroneous view of a complete race, induced by racial profiling, demonstrates the overall misconception and ignorance people have regarding people who are different from them. Labeling a particular group of persons as terrorists not only is unfair but it tarnishes the reputation of that entire race. By practically making discrimination an acceptable action, it hinders Arabs and other groups from obtaining jobs and a respected…
