Insecticidal Property of Acacia Seeds and Bark Against Termites
Insecticidal Property of Acacia (Samanea saman) Seeds and Bark Against Termites (Coptotermes vastator). A study on the insecticidal property of Acacia seeds and bark against termites was conducted to find out if these could be used against termites. The experiment was conducted at the laboratory of the Bureau of Soils in Lipa City and in Lumbang National High School from September to October 2005. The effort was initiated to enrich the laboratory activities in Chemistry and Biology for high school students.
It especially attempted to answer the following questions:
1. How can insecticides be prepared from Acacia seeds and bark?
2. How effective is the Acacia insecticide in combating or killing termites (Coptotermes vastator);
3. Are there significant differences in the effectiveness of the ethanolic Acacia extract and commercial insecticide (Solignum) in combating termites?
4. What are the implications of the use of Acacia seeds as insecticide on theenvironment and human health?
Ethanolic extracts were prepared from the seeds and bark of Acacia collected from areas surrounding Laurel farm in Lumbang, Lipa City. These extracts were used as samples in the qualitative analysis and preliminary screening for insecticidal property against termites. The screening of the ethanolic extracts from Acacia seeds and bark revealed the presence of saponin, tannins, alkaloids, reducing agents – glycosides, carbohydrates, which have the capacity to kill termites. The one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used in comparing the means of the effect of the ethanolic extracts against termites. Results were positive, showing the experimental sample to be comparable to Solignum.
Further clarification of the procedures and results should be directed to the researchers and adviser.

They wanted to see different aspects that Neem extract/powder had an affected on the bean beetle. The authors wanted to answer questions they felt where not address by the majority of the scientific community. Such as how their behavior patterns are affected by Neem powder, or if the bean has been treated with neem if the eggs are affected in any way. The information found was useful from a learning perspective however there was no measurable effect to the bean beetle.…

    Termites are small, white cylindrical insects that are usually found in wood or in the ground. They are know for deteriorating wood in households by eating the wood in the house structure. They do this because the wood contains cellulose. Termites use a caste system in the community similar to ants. They have a single queen, workers, soldiers and young that make up their community. In nature, termites’ breakdown wood in order to use the cellulose and nutrients to help plants grow. Termites of course are notorious for eating the wood of households and can be a huge problem and inconvenience to any household because of their size and difficulty to remove from the wood. The termites set up their community in the wood and also don’t leave until all of the wood is eaten.…

    Termites produce special chemicals within their bodies called pheromones. Because termites are usually found inside dark areas, pheromones help them communicate in these places. Past studies have suggested that ink inside ballpoint pens contains pheromones, causing termites to follow any trail created by the ink. If a pathway is drawn with an ink pen, then a termite will be attracted to the path and trace it due to the pheromones. To test the behavior of termites in relation with the presence of ink, we outlined two shapes with two different writing utensils and timed how long out of a sixty second time period that the termite spent on each path. The results showed that termites spend a substantially longer amount of time following the path of an ink pen than paths made from other writing utensils. The tested termites spent an average amount of 26.9 out of 60 seconds on paths made by the ink pen, but an average of only 2.4 of 60 seconds on a path made by a Sharpie marker. The p-value for the data is 0.00309 for the pen and 0.000214 for the Sharpie marker. The results suggest that termites are attracted to the pheromones contained in ink. This contributes to understanding how termites communicate and travel in areas without light.…

    The antifeedant activity of the extracts choice and no-choice test methods, after 24 and 48 hours in each test, against 7 day old (3rd instar) larvae of S. litura on castor leaves. Stock solutions of the test compounds were prepared in the carrier solvents. Further dilution was done in emulsified water by maintaining emulsifier (Tween – 80) level at 0.5 % to yield various concentrations. Castor leaf discs (4 cm diameter) were punched out from the washed and dried castor leaves. Leaf discs were dipped thoroughly in each of the concentration and air dried. Moist filter paper discs were placed in glass Petri plates (9 cm diameter) on which a single treated leaf disc was kept (for no-choice method). In choice method, in each Petri dish, along with a treated leaf disc, one untreated leaf disc of same size was kept. Single pre-starved (3-4 hours), 7-day old larvae of S. litura was released into each Petri plate. Ten replicates were kept for each concentration. Leaf discs treated with solvent emulsified water served as control. The unfed area in each treatment was…

    Wheat (Triticum spp.) is a major cereal food for the Indian people and is stored in every home as flour where it was infested by insect pests like Tribolium sp. (Tenebrionidae: Coleoptera), Sitophilus oryzae (Linnaeus) (Curculionidae:Coleoptera) & Plodia interpunctella (Hubner) (Pyralidae :Lepidoptera). A traditional method was successfully followed to control the pest infestation on stored wheat flour. After drying and sieving the wheat flour, around 10 g of common salt and 5 g of asafoetida powder were mixed with every kg of wheat flour. The mixture was then stored in an air tight container around a year without any infestation. The presence of salt would hav inhibited the pest multiplication and the asafoetida powder would have kept the pleasant odour.…

    Our purpose of making this repellant is that insect will avoid destroying that object like plants, things, foods and such for it has a strong smell insects doesn’t like. And we make this repellant by boiling the two ingredients and after that, we combine it together with the rubbing alcohol. And, it is effective. We tested it in the two candies. One without the repellant and one with a repellant. We observe that ants avoided the candy with a repellant and they focus on the candy without a repellant. This repellant is really effective because of the lemongrass, garlic, ginger and alcohol.…
