Chapter 1
Introduction
A. Background of the Study
Mahogany is a large tropical tree with a symmetrical appearance, best-known for its valuable heartwood. Mahogany is used in multistory systems in the Philippines, boat and ship building and pattern-making. The tree is also appreciated as a beautiful and useful street tree. A fast-growing, graceful, straight-trunked, semi-deciduous tree growing to 30-70ft. Most trees, particularly planted street trees grow to 30-40ft. It looses its leaves just as new leafs sprout, so while deciduous, the tree is not without leaves for long. Tiny flowers are followed by four to five", woody fruits that burst open to expel the seeds. Mahogany is a valuable hardwood and this tree was once extensively harvested for its wood. Batac City, Ilocos Norte, has numerous mahogany trees planted throughout the city for this purpose.
The termites are a group of eusocial insects. Termites mostly feed on dead plant material, generally in the form of wood, leaf litter, soil, or animal dung, and about 10% of the estimated 4,000 species (about 2,600 taxonomically known) are economically significant as pests that can cause serious structural damage to buildings, crops or plantation forests. Termites are major detritivores, particularly in the subtropical and tropical regions, and their recycling of wood and other plant matter is of considerable ecological importance.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study is focused on the determination of the potential of mahogany seeds to control termites.
It specifically aims to answer the following questions: 1. How effective is the mahogany seeds in terms of: a. Mortality? b. Length of time it can kill? 2. Is there a significant relationship between the percentage potential of

Oaks are hardwood trees . The oak wood has a density of between 0.75 and 0.85 g / cm 3 . It is a very tough and hard material. Its resistance to insects and fungi (natural durability) is very important because of its high tannin content . The large radial oak planks have been prized since the Middle Ages and are used for interior woodwork of prestigious buildings such as the House of Commons in England in London and in the construction of fine carpentry. The wood of the oak tree…

IntroductionAnts Formīca are arguably the most successful organisms presently on earth. They evolved from a wasp like common ancestor approximately 150 million years ago(2006 Chuck Lydeard)1. Due to their long ecological dominancy amongst insect and short life span they have undergone a high rate of adaptive radiation. Leading to a reasonably large amount of species and inter- species diversity. There are at least 12000 different species of Formicidae (2008 Edward O. Wilson)2 which have colonised almost every landmass on the planet(Alice S. Jones 2006)3 This unique dominancy and prevalence means that Ants presently account for an incomparable 15 to 20%(2000 Ted R. Schultz)4,3 of the world's terrestrial animal biomass. Formīca exhibit eusociality, they have complex rigid social roles and interactions. They form colonies varying form a few hundred to super colonies with billions of individuals. Ant's prevalence is often over looked due to their size and nature. The time when we most notice their vast numbers is when it starts affecting us; but to put it in perspective there are around 1.7billion ants for every person in Scotland(2006 Edward O. Wilson) 5,6.…

Throughout the world there are many animals, plants, fungi and numerous other living organisms that are influenced by the overall condition or adaptations of other organisms. Whether it is a symbiotic relationship or a predator/prey relationship there are many ways in which animals and other living organisms operate and live; both dependent on others and their own adaptations. The point is that there are many relationships that provide a basis and means for the survival of a variety of different species around the world. This relationship is very apparent in the scientific findings regarding northern spotted owls (Strix Occidentalis), flying squirrels (Glaucomys Sabrinus), and truffles, which can include many varieties but especially Tuber Gibbosum in the Pacific Northwest and northern territories. Together, these animals and fungus are dependent on one another for both nutritional and reproductive reasons. The northern spotted owl, which is the dominant predator in this food chain, is threatened, as it requires special conditions in which to survive. The first condition for this owl is that it requires an old growth forest. An old growth forest is one, which has been around so long that is has attained biological characteristics that are unique. Due to continuous logging it is easy to see why the northern spotted owl is on the verge of being an endangered species. The northern spotted owls main source of nutrition is the northern flying squirrel. This squirrels main preference is to also reside in old growth forests as they provide optimal site for building nests and finding food. Truffles are the third part of this system and happen to be one of the primary food sources for the flying squirrel. Typically, truffles are found on Douglas fir trees, helping them in absorption of water and nutrients from the soil. Altogether these three individual organisms make up a circle of life and are not only vital to the health and wellbeing of each other, but also the well…

Thus, the need for alternatives to mainstream pest control is quite pressing. In reality, people have been using different materials as pest control against Callosobruchus maculatus for centuries. Ancient Egyptians in 1000 B.C., for instance, used ash dust as pest control for their stores of grain (M. Hafez, Nadia Z. Dimetry, and M. H. Abbass). More recently, essential oils have been considered effective pest control methods since they are comprised of volatile compounds and are not harmful to most mammals (G.K Ketoh et al.). While the effectiveness of essential oils has been tested, the effectiveness of sunflower oil specifically is uncertain and thus needs to be tested. The goals of this experiment are to determine whether sunflower seed oil will be effective in preventing the C. maculatus from laying eggs on the Vigna unguiculata. Based on the success of other essential oils, if the Vigna unguiculata are covered with concentrations of sunflower oil, then the C. maculatus will not be able to lay as many eggs on the beans as they would in the absence of sunflower oil. For the purpose of testing this hypothesis, the independent variable is the presence of sunflower oil, whereas the dependent variable is the number of eggs found on the beans after a period of…

Termites produce special chemicals within their bodies called pheromones. Because termites are usually found inside dark areas, pheromones help them communicate in these places. Past studies have suggested that ink inside ballpoint pens contains pheromones, causing termites to follow any trail created by the ink. If a pathway is drawn with an ink pen, then a termite will be attracted to the path and trace it due to the pheromones. To test the behavior of termites in relation with the presence of ink, we outlined two shapes with two different writing utensils and timed how long out of a sixty second time period that the termite spent on each path. The results showed that termites spend a substantially longer amount of time following the path of an ink pen than paths made from other writing utensils. The tested termites spent an average amount of 26.9 out of 60 seconds on paths made by the ink pen, but an average of only 2.4 of 60 seconds on a path made by a Sharpie marker. The p-value for the data is 0.00309 for the pen and 0.000214 for the Sharpie marker. The results suggest that termites are attracted to the pheromones contained in ink. This contributes to understanding how termites communicate and travel in areas without light.…

Madagascar is a small island located off the East Coast of Mozambique, home to a diverse group of organisms not known anywhere else on Earth. Theories on how they came to be on the island include: travelling across an exposed causeway between mainland Africa and Madagascar (McCall, 1996); being remnants of species found on a supercontinent known as Gondwana (Yoder & Nowak, 2006) and even floating over to the island on pieces of debris (Matthew, 1915).…

The trunks are important because they store water in case of drought (which may be crucial during the dry season of the African savannas. Baobabs are long-living trees and some have been known to live for thousands of years.
