Information Literacy In Nursing
Information Literacy and Healthcare Today We are now part of a technology world where most all working individuals have to have some computer knowledge to maintain an equilibrium state at both homes and work life. The American Nurses Association reports that informatics for all nurses require basic computer skills (Sewell, 2016).
What is Information Literacy?
Information Literacy is defined as the ability to know when information is needed, how to obtain the information, and how to understand and use the information effectively (Sewell, 2016). According to the American Nurses Association, it is the essential core of our practice (American Nurses Association, 2016). I believe information literacy follows the same guidelines that are expected in the nursing processes. Nurses must first assess their patient and see what it is their patient needs. Information literacy we must evaluate and see what information we are trying to obtain. Next nurses must come up with a nursing diagnosis and determine what factors might impact their patients’ health. Then nurses plan, implement the plan and evaluate the plan. Completing all steps of this process ensures nurses are treating the patient as a whole and anticipating their patient’s needs. Nurses must obtain up to date knowledge to incorporate changes to their nursing process. Nurses who are information literate ensure the knowledge they are gaining is validated and reliable. Working together all participants can help develop strategies to assist students in gaining information (The Association of College and Research Libraries, 2000). Not all individuals learn the same way so it is important to incorporate different learning tools to assist each person. First, a student must determine the information needed. Students can obtain this knowledge from their instructors, technology, and references pertaining to their subject matter. One must also determine their audience they are trying to capture and tailor their information and presentation to reach the selected target (The Association of College and Research Libraries, 2000). Second, students must select an investigative method. This investigation might include fieldwork, lab results, etc. They must also assess the relevance of the results they have obtained (The Association of College and Research Libraries, 2000). All the information and knowledge obtained through research and investigation should be managed by various technologies to help organize and track the data (The Association of College and Research Libraries, 2000). Third, the information must be incorporated into ones knowledge base and value system.
