Home Safety for Infants Infant safety education is needed for all new mother’s not just first time mothers, new safety concerns may have been discovered since the last child was born. A person’s home is meant to be a safe place for the family. Unfortunately every room in a home has potential danger. With some thought and a little money a home can be child proofed in a few days. The subject of this interview is a 22-year-old white female. She lives in Buckeye Arizona with her husband who is also white and 25-years-old. Samantha has been married to Bladen for two years and their daughter is almost 7-months-old. Samantha studied Judicial Reporting at Mid-State College in Peoria Illinois and has worked in this field for over three years. Bladen has worked for a printing company since he graduated high school and is doing well at it. I explained to Samantha that home safety would be the topic we would cover. She was glad to be talking about this since Cora is just about to start crawling. Samantha stated that she and Bladen were just talking about child proofing the other day. I explained that Cora’s danger area on the floor right now is as far as she can move. Before Cora starts to crawl she and Bladen need to get down on the floor and see what she can see and that will be her danger area for a time. As she starts walking they again need to get down on Cora’s level again to see what she sees. Every time Cora move onto a new stage of development, child proofing may need to be done again. We started talking about window blinds. Samantha stated she has them on every window in her home. I explained that older blinds have cords that hang with a loop. This loop is a potential for strangulation for infants. She was glad hers did not have any blinds with hanging loops. I also told her to be careful of the blinds that have four to six cords dangling. They can get tangled and be a threat when the blinds are raised since then the cords get

The subject of my interview is Rob Reyes. He has been our next door neighbor since we moved here to Indio six months ago. He is a second generation Filipino-American that was born in America and has lived in California all of his life. Rob is 26 years old and has been married to his wife Sandra, 27, for 2 years. They don’t have any children, but do plan on having some once they save more money and the economy gets better. Rob is a technician for Time Warner Cable and has been employed with them for 7 years. His wife Sandra works at a doctor’s office in Palm Springs 30 miles away, so both of them are gone most of the day and we only see them in the evening when they are home from work.…

Throughout the day all spaces are checked for hazards and kept free of clutter to avoid problems during an emergency. Their environment should always be inspected for choking hazards. As a caregiver it’s important to provide children with a sense of security through words and actions, which encourage exploration and support developmental growth.…
