Illegal Immigration Thesis
The American work scene is changing forever. As Americans from the Baby Boomer generation retire, and more and more high school graduates enroll in college, there is one economic issue. Entry level jobs are going unfilled except by one group, immigrants. However, these are not just any immigrants. Illegal immigrants fill the jobs that are no longer being taken. As much debate as there is surrounding them, one thing is undeniable. Our economy depends on steady growth of workers. And love it or hate it, this is what illegal immigrants are for us. Illegal immigrants affect our economy in both positive and negative ways, but they are essential to our economy now and in the future.

Illegal immigrants have lowered the wages of US adults without high school diplomas by 0.4 to 7.4% over the years. And between 1990 and 2006, illegal immigrants reduced wages of previous generations of immigrants by 6.7%. Interestingly enough, illegal immigrants tend to compete more with other immigrants than natural born citizens. But, they clearly are having an effect on low level American workers, although the magnitude of this is debatable. The problem is that other immigrants are the ones most affected by illegal immigrants, so in a sense, the illegal workers are the ones who tend to be rewarded. And there is not much potential for this trend to change. Very low wage immigrants depress the pay of everyone else, while still not contributing the economy. President Trump is unclear on exactly what he will do, although it is clear that illegal immigrants will be greatly affected. Mass deportations are not the right answer, but it is a possibility in the future. Ryan Edwards, an economist at Mills College, says ¨US employers would likely shrink their businesses-rather than search in vain for legt as al workers- if the lost workers to mass deportations.” Despite what Trumps says, deporting immigrants will not bring back US manufacturing jobs. It is more likely that we will use these jobs altogether, causing unemployment rates to once again soar. And it is often forgotten that illegal immigrants money goes back into the economy, just as normal citizens do. They use their wages to buy products and services, acting as consumers the same as legal residents do. Some of them even pay taxes, without receiving government benefits.
