Illea's Character In The Selection Of Ilea
The Selection An important literary element for this book is setting. Illea, the country where The Selection unfolds, houses to all of the characters. Illea represents a dystopian North America and takes place set 300 years after World War III takes place. It has 35 provinces and one girl from each province will be selected to take part in the Selection. The province Carolina lies where North and South Carolina are today. Two main characters, America Singer and Aspen Leger originate from there and both live poorly. Not many wealthy people live in Carolina. Another province called Angeles stands where Los Angeles and other surrounding parts of California exist today. Prince Maxon Schreave lives in Angeles in the palace as part of the royal …show more content…
America Singer, whose point of view the book is written in, is the main character. She has been chosen to participate in the Selection. She has fiery red hair and icy blue eyes. She did not want to be part of the Selection at first but ends up winning it. She has an adventurous personality and acts very rebellious. Maxon Schreave, the prince of Illea and heir to the throne, picks from a group of 35 girls to be his wife. Unlike many people that live in the palace, Maxon does not act like the world revolves around him. Maxon meet America in the palace garden the night before he should officially meet her and the other girls. Angry that she must take part in the Selection, America yells at Maxon and claims that she still loves her ex-boyfriend, Aspen Leger. Aspen encouraged America to enter the Selection so she could at least have a chance at a better life instead of living as peasants with him. Shortly after America is chosen and leaves for the palace, Aspen is drafted into the military and stationed at the palace. America learns this and he plans secret meetings with her. This shows that he would risk anything, even death, for the girl he loves. These characters demonstrate qualities that set an example for other characters throughout the
