The True Definition of an Ideal Soldier
“God of our fathers, who by land and sea have ever lead us to victory, please continue your inspiring guidance in this the greatest of all conflicts. Strengthen my soul so that the weakening instinct of self-preservation, which besets all of us in battle, shall not blind me to my duty to my own manhood, to the glory of my calling, and to my responsibility to my fellow soldiers. Grant to our armed forces that disciplined valor and mutual confidence which insures success in war. Let me not mourn for the men who have died fighting, but rather let me be glad that such heroes have lived. If it be my lot to die, let me do so with courage and honor in a manner which will bring the greatest harm to the enemy, and please, oh Lord, protect and guide those I shall leave behind. Give us the victory, Lord.
~General George Patton

A soldier is an experienced warrior, trained to lay his or her life on the line for the good of those they serve. The mental and physical tolls taken on him or her, as they progress throughout their training and their skills are put to the test, is an immense burden for someone to carry. Because of the massive amount of stress placed upon them, the outcome and efficiency of soldiers has the possibility to vary from soldier to soldier. The ideal soldier is competent, efficient, skilled, and has the ability to make logical decisions whenever necessary. While many people are able to be molded into an ideal soldier, there are those who fail to adapt into this life style. These people are deemed unfit to be soldiers either by their own means, or by the military. One example of “bellow par” soldier is Pvt. Pyle from Full Metal Jacket. Pvt. Pyle from the very beginning strikes the viewers as incapable of following orders and totally inept when held to the military standards. Sgt. Hartman instantly points out Lt. Pyle’s inability by relating him to a

It saddens me to hear about the complete lack of value to the war effort put on by this small group of Americans. That key leaders given the authority to effect change sit idle while lives are lost. But then, as I stomach that blow, I focus on their true grit, their courage, their resolve, their valor, the bravery, their fearlessness, their dedication, the sheer tenacity of these Hero’s, and I am reminded of why our country is so great. God bless those that lost their lives in this battle, and the families that they left…

The beginning of the film portrays SDI Hartman as a mean SOB. Joker is a witty and sarcastic recruit who can talk himself out of any situation. Private Pyle is a fat and slow recruit who probably shouldn’t be in the Marines. SDI Hartman gets on Joker and Pyle and humiliates them both in front of their comrades. Eventually Joker earns the respect of Hartman and is rewarded with leadership of the squad. Pyle, on the other hand, does not get the same respect. He is constantly put down and embarrassed by Hartman. Joker reaches out to Pyle in an attempt to transform him into a Marine that can survive in combat. The film shows Joker teaching Pyle how to do basic tasks such as lacing his boats, cleaning his gun, and climbing over a tower. Joker takes on these responsibilities because he is a leader and wants Pyle to succeed. I feel Joker tries to lead by example where as…

“...I will commence this holy day by writing to you. My heart is filled with gratitude to Almighty God for His unspeakable mercies with which He has blessed us in this day, for those He has granted us from the beginning of life, and particularly for those He has vouchsafed us during the past year. What should have become of us without His crowning help and protection? Oh, if our people would only recognise it and cease from vain self-boasting and adulation, how strong would be my belief in final success and happiness to our country! But what a cruel thing is war; to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbours,…

Throughout the passage of time, in order to make sense of the world and justify established ideologies, man has put forth disproportionate effort into defining what is deemed by the masses as acceptable and appropriate. With the formation of these social life requirements, it goes without saying there will be outliers who do not fit this man-created construct, either by innate or self-realized characteristics. This social restraint is undoubtedly the source of much emotional turmoil and unrest. Here is where Sarah Rosetta Wakeman’s story begins. As a white, American woman born in the 1800’s, Wakeman’s scope of “acceptable” life directions was very limited, and much can be said about how she dealt with the obstacles created by the aforementioned social constraints. Wakeman’s decision to leave home, and assume the characteristics of a man, was more out of a sense of familial duty than an outward expression of suppressed sexual identity. In order to better understand Sarah’s motivation one must first analyze her childhood and the environmental factors which molded her.…

War is one of humanity’s oldest vices. The keystone elements in human history are how soldiers respond to armed conflict and the stress of the war. They didn’t question the order. They did not ask anyone why they were being pushed into the valley of death. They knew it was their duty to do and die. Therefore, they rode forward into the valley where death stared at them. ADRP 6-22 states “An Army Leader is anyone who by virtue of an assumed role or assigned responsibility aspires and influences people to accomplish organizational goals” The Army’s “Total Soldier Concept” seeks to highlight soldiers that are well rounded. These soldiers will possess more than the required job, technical and tactical competencies. These soldiers are self-motivated, confident, and perform all duties in accordance with published standards. These soldiers seek out more than the mandated military professional development, often obtaining college degrees in addition to their core duties.…

First, The Soldier, he is the minimum requirement guy. For example the soldier is the classmate that doesn't do less or more than is required, he is typically the one proud at making seventies (70’s). At this moment, my little brother, Kelvin, is the soldier. He only does enough to “pass” in order to play football. He does not give his teacher less than is required, nor does he give them more. Another example for the soldier is the classmate who never asks questions, whether they understand or not. Most students have this quality of the soldier; they are afraid of being ridiculed for sounding stupid or they are getting used to a new environment. The final example of the soldier student is the classmate that never complains, no matter the situation. This student never complains whether they were wrongfully graded or not because the result comes out the same. These are the student who believe that effort should be just right; not too little yet not too much, in order to escape notice. Soldiers don’t ask questions, they don’t show off, they don’t complain. They just get the job done. The soldiers’ trademark question is “what will we be graded on?”…
