Making them see that as pure they think they are, we all have biases. Another way is by making them learn about other cultures, races and beliefs. She had five children, but after recently losing two because of pneumonia, she has found herself in jeopardy of losing her other three children. Kendra does not know how to communicate properly because of growing up in a dysfunctional family. Fortunately, Pittsburgh is a large city and my internship is far enough removed from where I live that the chance of a dual relationship with J.D., or any of my clients, is slim. However, for social workers in rural areas where there are fewer mental health professionals, dual relationships, a therapeutic as well as a social, professional, or business relationship with a client, are harder to avoid. Even in larger cities like Pittsburgh many residents do not leave their communities, making the possibilities of a dual relationships more likely.…

For nearly one year, I’ve had the opportunity to work with the Austin PrEP Access Project (APAP), a volunteer-run health clinic that specializes in HIV prevention. Regardless of socioeconomic status, race, sexuality, or gender identity, we’ve been able to provide our community with a safe and comfortable environment that fulfills various medical necessities. Moreover, we’ve been able to eliminate most financial barriers by utilizing copay and financial assistance programs, ensuring that nearly everyone receives appropriate access to STI testing, treatment, and prevention resources. My experience at APAP has taught me how to appropriately facilitate dialogue while conveying respect and compassion to our patients, which ultimately enhances the quality of care we can provide. Patients often express how welcomed they feel when visiting our clinic, and this…

Moreover, targeting my attention towards a social worker and patient/client interaction has provided me with the thought that this was something I could see myself doing. Which is helping people by providing resources for a person’s situation, empowering them with the “stepping stones” to use the resources available to them. All the while enlightening the patient/client that “their situation” does not have to be something long term, but rather using these resources available to get them where they need to be.…
