1) How would you characterize the large household appliance industry and market?
According to the textbook, I would characterize the large household appliance industry and market have great potential and opportunistic revenues; especially, in the developing countries such as China, India, and Southeast Asia areas with great portion of population do not own any or very few of these appliances; moreover, the population of these countries is very large; for example China population about 1.35 billion, India about 1.15 billion that had supported by the industry analysts about their findings of the great opportunity for the industry sale as many or greater as North American and Western European consumers because the combination of two great factors--large population and low saturation level owning home appliances; in point of evidence, China is leading in the quantities of selling refrigerators (Kerin & Peterson, 2010). Any how, the market is showing great opportunity so is the competitiveness; there are many monster home appliances producers such as Matsushita Electric Industrial, Haier, and Whirlpool etc....
2) How do consumers buy large household appliances?
Consumers buy large household appliances most likely for replacement of the existing and/or broken one which has very high rate (70%) and the rest 30% for first time buyers and desired upgrade buyers according to data in the United States for retail chain. Further, data information showed that independent appliance retailers only have 47% due to product failure, 17% for remodel, 15% for first-time buyer, 11% for upgrading, and 10% for moving (Kerin & Peterson, 2010). In addition, it is similar to other products consumer are very high brand loyalty that they usually buy the same brand for replacement.     The situation for home improvement retailers is hopeful. Globally, the home improvement retail market is currently around $500 billion and is anticipated to arrive at an estimated $1,959 billion by 2017. (1) Due to the resources necessary to penetrate the industry, there is a low likelihood that a large competitor would enter the market. In addition, the overall industry has been relatively flat since the economic slump. Currently, the three key home improvement retailers comprise of Home Depot, Lowe’s and Menard’s. The large retail chains account for the majority of sales within the industry. (2) Home Depot is the largest company with Lowe’s coming in second. Customers include professional contractors and general retail purchasers. Because contactors buy on a consistent basis and in bulk, they are the main source of revenue for these chains. Companies like Home Depot and Lowe’s tend to incentivize contractors to stay loyal by giving them special bulk pricing. On the other hand, retail customers are less frequent, yet necessary. Retail customers will be drawn to the best overall experience, so the pressure remains high for these companies to offer low prices while providing exceptional service. Brand loyalty can be found in this industry, but customers are mainly driven by competitive pricing and superior customer service. (2)…

    Grant Nauta AHP Case Study Because American Home Products (AHP) currently operates with virtually no debt, their financial risk is very small. This shifts the burden heavily towards business risk. A porter’s five forces analysis is appropriate to determine the exact levels of business risk for American Home Products. First, the threat of substitutes is a risk that AHP cannot afford to ignore. Because they spend very little on Research and Development, and have to rely on their marketing to catch up to competitors, they always seem to be a step behind their competitors. In the industries that AHP operates, switching costs are very low and consumers based on anything from price to overall sentiment. Also, if a competitor markets a product more heavily than they do and creates a perceived level of product differentiation, this could harm demand for their products as well. Based on all of these facts, I would argue that the threat of substitutes is high. Next, the threat of entry of new competitors is something that must be addressed. The industries that AHP operates in happen to be very mature industries. Without some sort of revolutionary technology or change to make these industries more dynamic, it would be difficult for a new company to enter any of the industries that AHP competes in and be competitive. Also, because the industries AHP operates in are so established, it would take a very large capital requirement to even stand a chance of competing. Based on these factors, I would contend that the threat of new competitors is low. Furthermore, the intensity of competitive rivalry is something that can certainly affect AHP. Again, because they spend very little on research and development, a first mover advantage is something they will rarely, if ever possess. However, they do hold a comparative advantage in their levels of advertising and marketing. Though this helps, it does not make up for never having a first mover advantage.
