Uproar of cars and angry drivers in the distance. The pounding of footsteps against the pavement somehow carrying a hurried sort of nervousness, but she didn’t know why she was so disturbed. It was barely the afternoon. Her parents were on a trip, out of town, and won't be back for another week, and she considered herself lucky. Still, something today was making her skin crawl. She got the chills and picked up the pace, thankful that her apartment is just down the alley to the right.
The mouth of the alley opened up just a few more steps away, and she hurried her pace to a jog, feeling just a little silly. After all she is in Chicago, which is

Another day, another run. Far from being dull, though, Senri saw it as yet another opportunity to push herself. So it was that she found herself out by Central Park turning the streets into her playground, her medical supplies strapped to her legs as usual. A good thing, too, because from the sound of that explosion, she was going to need them! Curiosity and concern both piqued, she made a beeline for its source, helped along by the smoke already trailing into the sky. Gathering the wind about herself, she kicked in a burst of speed, feet barely touching the ground. As an afterthought, she fumbled out the polarized ski goggles that served to conceal her identity, slipping them over her head with a wince as the already fastened straps pull at her hair. She tugs her hood up just in time to round a corner... and skid to a stop at the scene unfolding before her. "All this only a few blocks away. What are the odds...?" In…

The street’s familiar scent of tobacco and mint helped to calm my nerves. It wasn’t cold outside, however a chill grabbed at my back. The path to the station was instinctual, today it seemed foreign and alien. My steps were slow and without the usual spring, their movement matched the grim expression I wore on my face. I’m not normally one to want to be caught in the act of doing something wrong, but today, I was greatly dispirited, I wasn’t stopped. I would have thought someone cared more about me.…

She was arriving closer to her destination. Her nose prickled and she inhaled the faint smell of salty water in the distance. When she arrived at the beach, she parked her car in the already crowded parking lot but, was lucky enough to find a shady parking spot under a large old tree with branches stretching out as if to welcome her arrival. Lisa grabbed her belongings and stepped out of her vehicle, excited for what the day is going to bring her. The sound of playful children laughing in the distance, the seagulls gawking, the muffled noise of waves, and the jingle-jangle of arcades games made her feel eager to make her way down to the beach.…

I believe that the gothic element were important during the early to mid-nineteenth century. First, Edgar Allan Poe’s work was dark and can be unappealing to most people or at least to me. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” Poe uses gothic element through death or decaying. For instance, “His eyes resembled that of a vulture—a pale blue eye, with a film over it… my blood ran cold; I made up my mind to take the life of the old man.” Secondly, Washington Irving’s demonstrates the gothic elements more in my opinion. In the “Rip Van Winkle” Irving shows us the gothic elements through the setting, ineffectual hero, and the supernatural. The setting is described as an untamed nature that large and beautiful but not man walked these lands. The ineffectual hero…

Gothic literature and magical realism are genres that both work to create strong emotions from the reader by using the type of elements they have in their stories. Magical realism is when the author uses recognizable characters who feel, act, and react in customary ways and introduces them to supernatural or unreal elements. Elements that pertain to magical realism that are found in the short story “House Taken Over” would be the realistic characters and the presence of a supernatural being. Gothic literature involves weird or violent incidents and supernatural or otherworldly occurrences to torment the characters in a psychological and/or physical way. Some of the elements of gothic literature that are…

As the wind blew past me, and the crunching of twigs and leaves echoed through the forest, Emma laughs and talks boisterously with her friend. I, her bracelet, clung snugly to her wrist. The ATV’s motor roared loudly as we sped down the dirt path. Glowing brilliantly, the ATV’s red paint reflected the sunlight. We didn't slow as we quickly approached a crossing. Speeding and Roaring, a van flew down the road. Oblivious, we continued down the path to the road.…

Gothic literature, writing that employs dark and picturesque scenery, startling, and melodramatic narrative devices, and an overall atmosphere of exoticism, mystery, and dread, was an extremely popular genre and still is today. It was so popular that authors like Flannery O’Conner and William Faulkner tried to imitate Gothic literature in his stories. Faulkner’s short-story, “A Rose for Emily” is disputable when it comes to fitting in with Gothic literature, but here’s why it clearly does.…

Once I got to the corner it seemed like I was the only person standing there now, at that isolated corner waiting… except I wasn’t exactly sure of what though; her, or some sort of transportation to take me far away from that dreary place. The rain was now tickling my nose and I could feel the water from beneath my feet in my shoe, as well as I could feel my now very messy damp hair. As I raised my right hand for a cab I felt a very freezing raindrop go down my arm, under my sleeve, and past my chest…

It was a Monday morning like any other, cold, and the little light that was present squeezing its way through the sky’s grey veil. It was on these bitter twilight mornings that I apprehensively pulled my half-asleep body out from my overwhelmingly warm and comfortable bed. Leaving the house, late as per usual, I took the normal route through the park on my now daily routine journey to college. The 15-minute walk turned out to be a 10-minute walk as I was able to pick up the pace to reach the station before my train left.…

The humidity was ruining my hair with each step I took through the bushes. The bushes grossed me out just thinking about each spider and insect waiting to attack me. I crept around my neighbors’ houses praying their dogs would stay sleeping. I was the only teenager in the entire community so it was not tough sneaking around. They were all retired with their hearing aids turned off, so I really had nothing to worry about. I had to cross the golf course where my friends would be waiting on the other side. Tonight my plan was to do anything and everything I felt like. I continued to walk slowly through the bushes and roll under the fence that was blocking my night of freedom. “Autumn!” I shouted at my crazy best friend not caring it was two in the morning. She was waiting inside Mike’s truck for me. “Wham” the door slams open and, she jumps out giving me a tight bear hug. “You ready?” she whispers. I smile in return, the thrill of not knowing how much trouble I was going to be in when I got home.…
