How Shakir's Death Changed My Life
In 2013 there were a record high of 56 murders in my home city of Trenton, NJ. My great-grandmother lived until she was 102 years old, so at the time, my thirteen year old brain never thought death could impact my family. I walked around Trenton’s streets no matter the time of night, witnessed various fights, and occasional gun scares- but no matter how dangerous the situation became, I could never see the gravity of it, and it’s long-range impact on my life. I was oblivious to and failed to realize the dangers that surrounded me. The violence did nothing but make me lose all hope for Trenton, the amount of deaths never impacted me until my cousin Shakir was murdered, it was at that time that death made me grow up.

I saw the way Shakir lived his life, and how closely I was following in his footsteps. I saw that no matter what happened, I could no longer live so unaware and I needed change. Shakir made it to his junior year of high school and he’d always say, “I can’t wait to go to college, to start getting my life together”, and I would laugh. I always wondered why he would rather wait until college to get his life together. The more I tried to figure out his thought process the more irrelevant I found it. It did not matter why he wanted to wait a year to change his lifestyle, what mattered was that he saw a flaw in the way he was living, and regardless of his circumstances, regardless of the fact that he lost sight, he still had vision. Every day that I feel like giving up, or breaking down, I remember that no matter what my cousin went through in his life he had vision, he had faith and he wanted to …show more content…
The reality of it all is, everyone will die- it is inevitable, but I am in control of how my story will be written. I realize that every day I live I am given a second chance to perfect my story, to make it as appealing as possible. I want to be remembered as a hard worker, a perseverer, and as a dedicated person. Despite my obstacles, I never gave up, and I never will -- so many times I wanted to end it all, to give up on everything, but I didn’t. Instead I used it as motivation to keep going. I have realized over the years that, things will never change, until I change it. So that is what I am doing, I am changing it. One step at a

Levitt and Dubner begin an argument with a murder crime of a woman called Kitty Genovese. Genovese was attacked by a man in a residential area and died because of the bystander effect. As New York newspaper reported, 38 people saw the murder but no one called the police or stop the assailant. This murder case astonished so many people and some people blamed the 38 residents, thought they're indifferent. Then, writers mention the rise of crime in the USA and analyze three reasons of this situation: the policy of releasing prisoners, post-war baby boom and violent TV show. (98-99) When I read this case, I feel angry about the 38 residents and think they're indifferent. At the same time, I also wonder why the residents are so apathetic. Maybe they thought other people will help Genovese; maybe they didn't…

You have just received a letter in regards to a family member, who you’ve known as kind, caring, funny, and has even helped you out in times of need. The state wishes to enforce capital punishment on him, however, capital punishment is on the ballot this November… What will be your vote? Most people can be persuaded when it comes to sales, dinner, and even forgiveness, but usually when it comes to an involvement of life and death, people know where they stand. Most choose life. When it comes to the death penalty, it can be very challenging to persuade your audience to support it. Edward I Koch, writer, attorney, and Mayor of New York City, takes on this challenge in an article Death and Justice in the New Republic, 1985. Discussing both point of views of the argument, Koch explains to his readers the pros and cons towards capital punishment, and explicitly showing why capital punishment serves purpose. Koch uses an academic, and a highly skilled route of persuading his audience through ethos, logos, and pathos to accept the justification that capital punishment should be supported.…

But, because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and that the witnesses saw he was black, they assumed that he killed these men. This took place in the 40’s, and it was when slavery was still a thing, black people didn’t have much freedom, and racially profiling was not addressed but it was surely there. This untitled photo relates to this book because police brutality is portrayed to be going off the walls, just like how slavery was really off the walls, and how much black people were put in jail. Angry. This relates to my book on a serious level. This book “A Lesson Before dying” conflicts so much anger from me and so much emotion from me. When I think of how blacks were treated back in the 40’s and before that, even after that, I feel angry. No one should be chained up and be treated unfairly. No one should be stripped of their freedom. When I look at this photograph is afflicts the same amount of anger, seeing a man chained to a truck holding a sign that questions the system, it makes me emotionally unstable. These two things, “A Lesson Before Dying.”, And this untitled photo is related by being able to afflict the same…

The city that I come from is not a representation of who I am. Pomona, California is known for it’s high crime rights, and all around gang violence. It is troublesome not to fall through the cracks when the temptation is all around my community. Growing accustom to this environment makes it that much easier to fall a victim into this lifestyle. At the age of 15, for the first time in my life, I experienced a retaliation drive by up the street from where I sleep, the place I call home. That night I heard a total of five gunshots, and was later informed the gun shots left two family friends paralyzed. One is now paralyzed from the neck down, and the other from the waist down. The two victims were sisters, and were not the main target. The shots…

The 2011 documentary “Into the Abyss” presents deeper examinations of capital punishment, or in other words state execution, through the sentences of Jason Aaron Burkett and Michael James Perry. These two teens allied in the same act of murder, but received two different verdicts: Burkett was given life in prison, and Perry was sent to the gurney. Author of the film, Werner Hezog, focuses on that triple homicide of 2001, where Texan residents Sandra Stotler, Adam Stotler, and Jeremy Richardson were shot to death and left discarded in the woods. As it reflects on the thoughts of the victims’ families, acquaintances of the convicted, and the guilty themselves, “Into the Abyss” leads to ask the question that has divided civil society with its…

Many families do not keep their guns in safe places that children couldn’t reach. For example, in South Carolina a 2-year-old shot his grandmother in the back while she was riding in the back seat of the car the child found the gun in the back of the front seat and shot his grandmother. Since children don’t know the concept of killing and harming people they have injured and killed many people, even children have killed their own parents and siblings. For example, a child shot his father in an event where many people were present. These kinds of incidents have happened many times because the parents didn't pay attention to the consequences of keeping guns. Not keeping guns in a safe place where children can't reach can result in familie’s own…

To begin with, when I was a little girl I lived in South Central Los Angeles, California with my two parents whom the names are Arturo Ferreiro and Cynthia Contreras. We all lived in one small pink house with my grandmother named Yolanda Contreras. My parents worked so hard to move from the ghetto. My mother once said to my grandmother “ I don’t want my daughter to distinguish the negativity.” There were so many crimes around our area and honestly, it was dense to walk around the neighborhood without having a doubt that something was going to happen. The helicopters were always around our neighborhood which made our family in danger. In 2004, I attended to a school named 107th Street School and everyday after school, my grandmother would pick me up from school. After a vigorous day at school, my grandmother would ask me “ Leslie do you want popcorn?” I’d respond with “ Yes grandma I’d be really appreciated if you bought me popcorn.” Every time she would ask I’d get excited because we would get closer to the lady with the red shirt across the street, the smell would get stronger. The taste of the popcorn was so delicious because it wasn't just popcorn, but it…

"At approximately 3:20 on the morning of March 13, 1964, twenty-eight-year-old Ms Catherine (Kitty) Genovese was returning to her home from her job as a bar manager. She parked her red Fiat in a nearby parking lot, turned-off the lights and started the walk to her second floor apartment 35 yards away. She got as far as a streetlight when a man grabbed her. She screamed. Lights went on in the 10-floor apartment building nearby. She yelled, "Oh, my God, he stabbed me! Please help me!" Windows opened in the apartment building and a man 's voice shouted, "Let that girl alone." The attacker looked up, shrugged and walked-off down the street. Ms Genovese struggled to get to her feet. Lights went back off in the apartments. The attacker came back and stabbed her again. She again cried out, "I 'm dying! I 'm dying!" And again the lights came on and windows opened in many of the nearby apartments. The assailant again left and got into his car and drove away. Ms Genovese staggered to her feet as a city bus drove by. It was now 3:35 a.m. The attacker returned once again. He found her in a doorway at the foot of the stairs and he stabbed her a third time, this time with a fatal consequence. It was 3:50 when the police received the first call. They responded quickly and within two minutes were at the scene. Ms Genovese was already dead. "…
