Biology 1224-Introduction to Biology for Majors
Abstract
Ann, April, Kymberly and Rebecca ran tests on decalcified eggs using different solutions to discover how water and other liquids enter and leave cells. The experiment consisted of soaking the eggs in varying solutions for five minutes, then draining them; recording their weight before and after each interval. The ladies hypothesized that if the eggs lost weight after being submerged, then the solution used to submerge the egg was hypertonic. If the egg gained weight, then the solution was hypotonic. If, by chance, the weight remained unchanged, then the solution would be isotonic. The

The original weight of the egg, before being submerged in the Coca-Cola was 102.93 grams.
Coca- Cola was poured into the cup to submerge the egg and was left, undisturbed, for 5 minutes. When the time had elapsed, the solution was poured into a separate cup, leaving the egg alone in the cup. It was then weighed, showing a loss of 1.65 grams. The Coca-Cola solution was then re-poured into the cup with the egg and left to sit another five minutes. This led Kymberly to believe that the Coca-Cola was hypertonic because the egg had lost weight when submerged in it.
The Second Five Minutes and Results Following a second five minute interval, bringing the total time to ten minutes, the solution was again poured into a cup separate from the egg and the egg weighed, revealing a gain of .17 grams from the last weigh-in, and a loss of 1.48 grams from its original weight. This new development showed Kymberly’s original conclusion to be false and that the solution may be hypotonic because the egg had begun to gain
