How Did Friar Lawrence Influence Romeo And Juliet
In the tragic play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare, Friar Lawrence perfectly displays a range of attributes such as being manipulative while simultaneously being compassionate. Although Friar Lawrence wanted peace between the Capulets and the Montagues, he inadvertently led Romeo and Juliet to their deaths because he did not stop their doomed romance. He both positively and negatively affected Juliet, Romeo, Paris, and both houses.
Friar Lawrence’s influence was mainly positive because he aided Juliet and Romeo in their quest for a happy life together, out of the influence of their families. When Juliet had to marry Paris, Friar Lawrence provided a solution, even though he was aiding in a fake death and was indirectly consorting with the exiled Romeo, disregarding his own well-being. Purposely, he agreed to marry Juliet and Romeo to help end the feud between the Capulets and Montagues because then the families would have no choice but to interact and put aside their differences for Romeo and Juliet’s sakes. While the families did indeed make peace, it was at the cost of Romeo and Juliet’s lives, which was initiated by the actions of the Friar.
