House On Mango Street Hope
Irish Proverb once said “hope is a physician of misery”. This quote means that the best medicine for any hindrance that you have in your life is hope. I agree with this quote because if you have hope when you’re going through a rough time in your life, you’ll always have something to believe. Two works that support this quote are The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and Of Mice and Men by John Steinback. Two literary techniques that both of these authors use are irony and characterization. In The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza and her family moved around incessantly from one apartment to another. The only problem was that they got fired from every job they worked for because Lenny would always get into trouble. For example they got chased out of Weed because Lenny was accused of trying to rape a lady but he wasn’t trying to rape her, he was just touching her lavishly exquisite dress because it was soft and Lenny liked soft things. So when they yelled at him he froze up and grabbed on her dress and wouldn’t let it go. So when they finally got a job working the fields in Soledad they had a plan. They’re plan was to save their money for a house they went to go see. Even though George told Lenny not to tell anyone he tells Candy and when George found out her became very angry with Lenny. When George, Lenny, and Candy combined all of their money together they realized that they almost had enough for the house. They were exuberant because they were that much closer to having their own wealth to live off of. This shows that even though they were migrant workers not making a lot of money, working together they helped each other get hope for them to one day own something they can call their
