Hortatory Exposition
Dear student…
Dear Editor,
We are writing to complain about ads on TV. There are so many ads, especially during our favourite programmes. We think they should be stopped for a number of reasons.
First, ads are nuisance. They go on for a long time and there are so many. Sometimes there seems to be more ads than programmes.
Second, ads are bad influence on people. They try to encourage people to buy unhealthy food like beer, soft drink, candy and chips. And they make people want things they do not really need and can not.
Finally, the people who make ads have too much say in what programmes people watch. That is because they want to put all their ads on popular programs that a lot of people watch. Some programmes which are not so popular get stopped because they do not attract enough ads, even though those programmes may be someone’s favourite.
For those reasons, we think TV station should stop showing ads. They interrupt programmes. They are bad influences on people, and they are sometimes put a stop to people’s favourite shows. We are sick of ads, and now we mostly watch other channels.

I can tell be honest when I say ads sometimes get in the way of what I'm trying to watch or listen too . I usually just turn the volume of and start doing something else in the meantime . For some it can be something as infuriating as that phone call from a telemarketer, and yet for most of us they are an annoying interruption to our daily television viewing pleasure. However, regardless of if we love them, hate them, or are indifferent towards them, we are sitting through more television commercial advertisements than ever before. Statistics from last year say that “audiences are watching more twenty-two percent more than five years ago and approximately five percent more from 2010” (Thomas, 2011).[i] The idea behind these television advertisements are to, like everything else, get us to purchase whatever is being sold on the screen. The great marketing television ads keep us entertained from the start to finish, they entice us whole-heartedly to the point where we feel insecure or even unintelligent to not consider buying the product. While this is the staple for what should be done, most of them fall way short of this goal. For all of the wrong reasons, when I really think of poorly marketed television advertisements that are prominent in today’s media products like Geico, Netflix, and Old Spice come to mind. These three products each show inefficient ways in promoting their service and should provide more concrete information to give the consumer a reason to buy their product.…

Everyday ads are shown through newspapers and media. We can see them everywhere, from park benches to sides of buses. However, no one really pays attention to any of them. They are skipped, ignored, and turned over to the next page over by many every single day. The most commonly used saying about ads that one could hear is that they are simply “annoying”. Whether there is a celebrity in them or not, people just want to continue with what they are reading, trying to watch, or listen to.…

If something was actually necessary to a person, then the person would buy it without the need for an advertisement promoting it. Advertisements often create a mindset within consumers telling them that they need a certain good or service when, in reality, they don’t. This mindset is another way that people wind up brainwashed by ads. Certainly it seems it as if buying something unnecessary isn’t always a bad thing, aside from the fact that it is typically a waste of money; however, some advertisements don’t just promote unnecessary items, but they promote harmful items, such as cigarettes. On top of giving them a profit, “advertising also had less quantifiable benefits for cigarette companies: it promoted the continued social acceptability of smoking and encouraged the incorrect belief that the majority of people smoke” (Source B).…

Advertisements comprise thirty percent of the material aired on television, and many of us will view more than two million commercials in our lifetimes. The A. C. Nielson Company reports that, by the age of sixty-five, the average U.S. citizen will have spent nine years of his or her life watching television—twenty-eight hours a week, two months a year. And in one year, the average youth will spend nearly twice as many hours in front of the tube (fifteen hundred hours) as he or she spends at school (nine hundred hours).[1] We may turn the box off eventually, but the advertisements remain. We are surrounded by them: they cover billboards, cereal boxes, food wrappers, bathroom stalls, tee shirts, and tennis shoes. They seep into our music, our newscasts, and our conversations. We recognize corporate logos and hum jingles ("Ba Da Ba Ba Ba"). In short, advertisements inform every aspect of our lives. Yet we often give them very little thought. We may make aesthetic judgments about them (e.g., "That commercial was funny" or "That commercial was stupid") or view them as innocent means to purchasing ends, but we rarely acknowledge them as messages that require critical attention.…

Seriously, there’s nothing more annoying than ads. I don’t even understand why companies spend so much money on ads. One of the things that annoys me most are TV adverts. Now, I think that TV adverts are a bit like marmite, you either love them or you hate them. Personally I absolutely loathe them seeing as I find them really irritating as do most people. Whenever an advert comes on the TV I usually switch the channel to another programme that’s on until my programme comes back on. Why? Because TV adverts are just ridiculously annoying and so time consuming. One of the things that annoys me the most is when you have to change the channel because you don’t want to watch the advert but then you end up completely forgetting about your first programme causing you to miss it. I mean I believe that TV adverts are basically hated by everybody. To me there is nothing worse than watching your favourite programme and having to wait about 5 minutes during adverts to find out what happens next. For example, lets’ set the scene, you’re sitting at home looking for something good to watch. You find a horror film that looks quite good and that has just started. You start to really enjoy the movie, you’re dying to know what’s going to happen, you’re on the edge of your seat and the rising suspense is unbearable. You’re just getting to the best bit and all is about to be revealed when suddenly the darkness from your screen is replaced by bright light. The creepy tension building music has gone and now your ears are filled by with nice calming music as the John Lewis clearance advert begins. Then you have to sit there for the next five minutes having to…
