Horsepalying Case Study Summary
When staff arrived on shift residents K.W. and T.W were observed horsepalying in the kitchen area. Residents KW and TW were both prompted with verbal prompts to check down to their bedrooms due to fact it was pass their bedtime however, they refused exhibiting playful behaviors i.g. running up and down the stairs and banging on the other residents door. JS (Staff) redirected the residents on several occasions to be respectable towards the other residents and to follow the program rules. Both residents went upstairs stating that they were done playing and were going to go to their assigned rooms. K.W was not receptive to the verbal de-escalation technique and swiftly move towards staff to try to push him. Staff using back leg pivoted to the left so that K.W would not push him, still using verbal de-escalation skills. K.W them turned around and made his first attempt to push face in the face. At this time staff utilized Crisis Wave approved one man therapeutic hold to secure K.W however, in the mist of placing him in the one-man therapeutic hold was punched in the face. While K.W was in the therapeutic hold he still continued to display physically aggressive behavior and was making threating statements toward staff. Staff continued to coach K.W and encouraged him to calm down so he could be released. Due to the fact K.W continued to display physical aggression, staff and K.W. fell to floor resulting in K.W receiving rug burn on the left side of his face. Once on the floor staff released K.W, retreated to position one of Crisis Wave and began to provide verbal de-escalation skills. As KW got up he snatched grabbed the house keys that fell out of staff pocket while engaged in the therapeutic hold and stormed out of the home and proceeded to walk up the street in the
