Home Ownership Workshop
The Home Ownership Workshop was held on Saturday, February 6, 2016. It was held in the Logan City Library and was put on by the USU Family Life Center - Housing and Financial Counseling. There were several staff, interns, and community members that presented at this workshop. The following is an overview of what each speaker presented on, and may not be in chorological order of how they presented the information.
Loryn Law: Loryn first introduced and welcomed everyone to the workshop. We did a fun game where we split up into groups and did an activity on the board of ice breaker questions. We were able to get to know the people in our class better, but also were able to see what areas on home ownership

She first presented on housing sustainability. We went over mortgage basics. This way we were able to learn the basics of what is all in your mortgage and what you need to know when applying for a mortgage. I really loved how she emphasized that we should use our budget as a guide. It really went hand in hand with what Loryn had taught right before. Once we learned the mortgage basics we were taught how the mortgage sustainability worksheet goes. Ellie did a wonderful job at explaining this work sheet, especially for those in the class that had never seen it before. We also were able to go over debt, mortgage information and ratios, and also interest. These were a part of the worksheet, so we just briefly covered these topics as we filled out the work sheet. At the very end of the day Ellie present again. This time was just giving a general review of how the workshop went. She asked what went well, what people like the most throughout the day, and asked if anyone had any addition questions. It was done in a very professional …show more content…
The first time was covering home inspection and healthy homes. I loved how she shared personal experiences and gave general information on this topic. I also liked how she emphasized that not all home inspections will look for certain things, so make sure your inspection covers the issues you want them to look at. The second time she presents she discussed closing on the loan. We first went over what closing is. We then talked about closing costs, and who pays what. She also showed a loan estimate. This was a really great visual to see what is all included in the closing

Also provided was a cost comparison of replacing these cheaper materials with material from Lowes (2010). A comparison of materials used for Oakwood homes (2000) versus Rockwell (2010) stick-built homes was shown. It was also stated and proven manufactured homes are not energy efficient. It was also explained what a big disadvantage and how difficult it can be for one to try to acquire a manufactured home loan; this showed how hard is it is for someone to try to resell one. Because of these disadvantages, it is proven that unless one is planning on a big financial commitment and plans on living in the home forever that people should not purchase a manufactured home. Goosens (2002) advises, before one goes and buys a manufactured home, one should consider the options of buying a higher priced home that will appreciate in value and last longer. When one is considering a manufactured home because these homes are cheaper and have more square footage, remember the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Space is not everything and one needs to consider if the extra space is worth the extra costs that can be avoided by sacrificing a few square feet. People should ask themselves if they are ready for such a big financial…

One of the drawbacks in the lesson was not enough hands-on interaction between the students. It was mainly teacher to student. For an ELL this may be confusing if she is not checking in with the ELL student, making sure they are understanding the material. She did not once go around the tables and check for understanding with any of the student except for asking question that were needed to be answered.…

Debra Wuichet is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from University of Tennessee. She is the Director of Social Services at North Mississippi State Hospital and has been working there for sixteen years. Her topic of the presentation was mental illnesses and schizophrenia. I really enjoyed her speech because I had little previous knowledge of mental illness. Even though I have taken a few classes that discussed the illnesses, I can understand better with stories or a way to imagine a situation and Debra provided that. Information that I thought I knew, was stuff I had assumed from watching television shows and movies. Most of that information is inaccurate.…

On April 11th, 1968, president Lyndon Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The act’s purpose was to eliminate discrimination during the sale, rental, and financing of a house based on someone’s race, religion, national origin, and gender. This bill difficulty passing as from 1966-67 congress regularly considered a bill similar to this but failed to because of lack of support. However, when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, president Lyndon Johnson thought a way to commemorate his death was to quickly sign a bill regarding unfair housing because of discrimination. In addition, another issue that caused this bill to be signed was the amount of families of war heroes in Vietnam who could not purchase a home because of their race.…

The House I Live In by Eugene Jarecki is a documentary film about the war on drugs in the United States. It raises many contemporary intercultural concerns about the issue, but first it would be important to explain what cultural groups it highlights. We would first think about diving the war on drugs between drug users and law enforcement, but after watching this movie we can tell that there is a real intercultural issue amongst drug users and prisoners incarcerated for drugs. Indeed, we learn in the movie and its website that “even though White and Black people use drugs at approximately equal rates, Black people are 10.1 times more likely to be sent to prison for drug offenses. Today, Black Americans represent 56% of those incarcerated for drug crimes, even though they comprise only 13% of the U.S. Population”.…

The most successful, long term, low-income housing projects are those that use sustainable design and address the social, cultural, and economic needs of residents. Traditionally built low-income housing projects are associated with high crime rates and high mortality rates among the residents who live in them. They do not provide for the needs of residents, resulting in many of the problems these low-income housing projects face today. These problems range from endangerment of human life, psychological afflictions due to the high stresses that are endured by residents, disease epidemics caused by overcrowding and unsanitary living conditions (in combination with a substandard public health system,) and rejection from the greater community based on the stigma traditional low-income housing projects have generated. Sustainable, or “green” design offers many solutions to the problems housing projects present today, including healthier living environments, high efficiency utility systems that result in lower bills for residents, safe recreation areas for common use, a sense of community within the project as well as with the greater community, and aesthetically pleasing environments to live in. Building with sustainable materials alone will not alleviate the problems traditional housing has, but must combine elements of sustainable design with residents’ needs. By implementing sustainable low-income housing projects with residents’ need in mind, the developers, residents, and the community as a whole will benefit.…
