Hillsborough High School Research Paper
Over the years, the Hillsborough High School has made Physical Education a mandatory requirment for all students to fulfill each year. Physical Education has been viewed as an essential time for students to develop leadership skills and teamworking skills. Students are also able to develop exercise habits for the future. Furthermore, many still believe that gym can alleviate stress, allow for athletes to be leaders, and it provides a social component which is important for both athletes and non-athletes. Additionally, gym also teaches important topics such as Nutrition, First Aid, CPR, and the Adventure Course (Fanizzi). Although gym may seem beneficial for most students, most athletes do not feel that gym is neccessary for them, as they already receive enough exercise out of school. “Most teenagers believe that with their involvement in high school teams and those who compete regularly on a travel or club team are already receiving enough exercise and should be able to skip out on gym” (“Cresskill High School to Allow Athletes to Skip Gym Class”). Despite the fact that physical education provides many benefits for students, student athletes would be able to spend more time on homework, become less stressed, and prevent themselves from injuries if they were given the chance to opt out of gym at the Hillsborough High School.
Although the Option 2 Program can alleviate stress that athletes face when juggling school with sports, it also takes away from the benefits of participating in the Physical Education Program.
