High Noon at Alpha Mills Case Study

Zuochen Lu A00336706

This case “High noon at Alpha Mills” talks about an oil plantation which name is Alpha Plantation Sdn. Bhd. This plantation consists of an oil palm estate and one palm oil mill. Mr. Ang started to work at here when he was 15, then he acts as gatekeeper, anyone who wants to see mill manager should meet Mr. Ang first.
The oil palm faced many challenges in 1999. World oil price were diminishing in an amazing speed, and palm oil hit a 15-year low. Captain Chubb, the mill manager said “We are doing nothing wrong, and have met all our efficiency targets. It’s the market that is killing us!” Of course after this, he was given his marching order. Instead of him, a new mill manager, Mr. Ian Davison, came this mill in early 2000. He was not a career plantation engineer and had never managed an agricultural product-processing mill befor. He came with some new idea, and Mr. Ang expressed his full support for his plan. This plan were not going so well, Mr. Davison think Mr. Ang effect his plan, but after Mr. Ang leave Alpha Mill, team performance began to deteriorate and no amount of pep talks could improve it.

In this case, we can find some management problem in Alpha mill. First is a different skill requirement within different management context. In this case, Mr. Ian Davison had never been a plantation manager. In china, we have slang: “Difference in profession makes one feel worlds apart.” This one is a good example; he is not a plantation manager before this, even he graduated from Ivy-League MBA, and come with some good idea, he cannot fix up the mills’ problem, maybe he can be a good electronics engineer. He wanted to use his experience on this company, his plan like improve technology, adopt more stringent performance measure. This maybe not good for Alpha mill now, because their faces huge deficit now, install new technology and automation means huge

The Most Dangerous Game is about a man named Rainsford who falls off his boat and is stranded on an island called Ship Trap Island. He discovers that the island is owned by a skilled hunter named General Zaroff. Rainsford discovers something different about the general is placed in a life and death situation. There were many problems with the company. The company did not have a concrete process that was aligned with the goal. Some of the problems is increased inventories, increased operational expenses and reduced throughput. The company's focus was only on increasing efficiencies. The reason behind this to be more specific, is the installment of new robots that were used to produce more and more finished goods that were not needed in the market and in the case of products needed, there aren't any parts that were available. The plant was unbalanced as it was not balancing the capacity of its resources with the demand from the market. Another reason are bottlenecks that the plant had to deal with.…

The proposed combination of methods of manufacturing and mixing materials has not been tried elsewhere in the company, and most of the processes will be entirely new to many of the employees. In addition to location, material, and process changes the reporting relationships will change. Prior to this new plant, all the heads of departments in the plant reported to their functional Vice…

The company had launched design defect products (Turbo Tiller), which caused consumer’s injury and ended up in a scandal. The causes of design defect came from various reasons such as, the declining sales, which led to the planning of unrealistic product launch and schedule, Organization ethical issues, and lack of communication within the organization. (See appendix 1 for summary) Immediate Action/ Short term plan First of all, company have to think about the company image from the ruined situation happening to the injured person and to express company sincerity. NFG firstly should to take the responsibility on that particular issue by helping the sufferer with medical fee or damages. After that the process of giving them the knowledge of how to use the product in the right way is settled in order to avoid any mistakes or loss occurring later on. In this case study Roger Cahill has been acting as the head of mobile division for less than a year. Currently he is struggling as he faces great difficulties adapting BoldFlash to a changing marketplace. The problem really started a year ago when Mr. Jim Harrison appointed the young Roger Cahill to a VP position. Although Roger has led a research project in his previous work, he is only 24 years old and inexperienced to manage a company at VP level. Positions at those levels require years of strategic leadership and management skills. Nevertheless in the last 12 months, the company focused primarily on the redundant production of customized chips without further research or product development in new and upcoming areas like the storage device. This negligence from both product development and marketing is a huge loss to the company as they missed out on the opportunity to launch new product line; therefore missed the opportunity to penetrate the potential market. Now the company has old products not priced competitively and struggling to penetrate the marketshare. Also the four groups within the division, product development, marketing, sales and manufacturing are constantly in conflict and don’t have the reinforcement from the leadership to work as a team. Although Cahill has observed the dysfunctions, he has not implemented any processes or trainings to work as a cross functional team. The company’s profit margins are low and Cahill has to take initiatives to suggest number of changes. With the staff that has low morale and lacking motivation, Cahill has to develop action plan for improvement. He has to define roles and propose organization change design to deliver an outcome necessary to be successful and generate higher profits.…
