Greek mythology and The Bible seem to have very different stories and content. The bible is about being a good person and following the ten commandments, while Greek mythology is filled with unfaithful spouses and unjust gods. However there are a few similar stories that might come from common backgrounds. The legends have corresponding parts, which makes them almost identical. Three examples are the first women, the great flood and Hercules and Samson.…
Zeus is not omnipotent as he is most often perceived. He is not the most powerful Greek God, but simply the one who happened to fulfill the prophecy of Cronus’ fall. Although, he was the one appointed the task of releasing his brothers and sisters by prophecy, it was by chance that he happened to be the son that was saved. All the children of Cronus were equal, and Zeus needs the help of all of his siblings to defeat Cronus. The prophecy said a son would be stronger than Cronus but never omnipotent or stronger than other gods. In addition, Zeus did not demonstrate the power of creation alone. In one story, Epimetheus and Prometheus take the responsibility of creating mankind. In another story, it is all the gods that made mankind from metals.…
It is possible to explain some but not all the features of Philon’s account through considering it as an amalgam of Ugaritic and Hesiodic elements. By approaching the piece with the idea that it is an amalgam of the two may cause the reader to miss out on the unique differences the texts has. For example, Kronos punishes his father not to succeed him but “in defense of his mother” (54). This differs from the other text where the main motivation is to succeed one's father. In addition, in Hesiod's Theogany Zeus is the father of Athena while in Philon’s account Athena is the child of Kronos. These are just a few differences and there are others as well. Although it may seem the similarities outweigh the differences the differences make it impossible…
The story of Prometheus changes a bit thru history, starting out that Zeus was tricked by…
When Telemachus meets Athena she exclaims how he looks remarkable similar to the hero she patronized, "You must be, by your looks, Odysseus' boy?" (8), through her description of their similarities readers are able to be introduced to Odysseus without even meeting him. The effect of comparing father to son brings a dramatic element that leaves readers awaiting for the reunion of the two. Elaborating on Athena's guidance to Odysseus, and eventually Telemachus, her help shows that the gods are reoccurring throughout the epic and in Greek…
Prometheus was the kindest of all the Titans or even the gods, but one day, Zeus ordered that everyone was forbidden to interact with the humans. Prometheus could not stand to see humans- let alone anything- suffer and to watch them go extinct because Zeus threw a fit, so he gave the humans fire in order to live. When Zeus found out about it, he became enraged and killed him a hundred times, then chained the titan to a large tree, only to watch mankind. Then, as he was not satisfied, Epimetheus’ story comes into place: Zeus asked Athena to make him a daughter, and after she did so, he called her Pandora, and offered her as a wife to Prometheus’ brother. After he accepted, Zeus gave them a beautiful box as a wedding gift, which had a note that read “DO NOT OPEN” which was obeyed for many months. One day while her husband was not home, Pandora’s curiosity got the best of her, so she opened it, and all the terrible things in the world flew out, no matter how fast she closed it. Famine, disease, murder, and much more flew out of the box, making her sad. But following everything, a small bug crawled out of the box, and smiled at the woman. The bug was named…
Everyone did fear Odin and Zeus; they were considered the almighty gods. I also do not believe that Zeus would of made the same sacrifice. I figured that Zeus valued women, pride and power more than he valued wisdom. I think that the only way that Zeus would sacrifice his eye for wisdom is because he wanted to pride himself in that experience. Overall, I believe that there is a slim chance that Zeus would ever make the same sacrifice.…
Prometheus was an intermediary himself, between gods and men, attempting to aid human beings by providing them with fire and treating them with general favoritism. The story of Prometheus acts as simply a means by which certain elaborations and explanations can be made. Just as Prometheus, son of Iapetos provides fire to man, Hesiod’s tale of Prometheus provides a deeper comprehension of the attitudes of Zeus, king of the gods, and an acceptable cause for the evils that plague mankind. Prometheus has no value in himself; even his rescue by Herakles was achieved for the “glory of Theban-born Herakles”. Prometheus’s identity is entirely dependent on Zeus’s punishment delivered to mankind as a result and in turn, the explanation of these two things is entirely dependent on…
Both are great epics from ancient literature and tell an excellent story of honor and duty. Both epics have great warriors who are fighting for their people, although they have different motivations for doing so. The distinct contrasting differences occur in the writing style of the authors, the characters, and the overall story told. These two ancient epics have many contrasting characteristics that defined Greek and Roman epics.…
In Greek and Norse mythology that took important roles as the foundation of today’s cultures are very similar yet different. They have many different traits and the way people wanted their gods to be. The two mythologies reflect the different ideologies. The similarities and the differences that stand out the most are between the god of all gods, Odin and Zeus.…
Zeus is known as the most powerful god in Greek mythology. He is the central figure of the Greek gods as he is not only the god of the sky but also the king of the gods. He ruled over the Olympian gods in the tallest mountain in Greece, Mount Olympus where he lived. Being the most feared god of all gave him the liberty of doing and having anything that he desired. Zeus played a key role in many of the Greek mythologies.…
The biggest similarity between Odin and Zeus are they both gods,m ruler of their places and sky-fathers. they have many differences than their similarities that's why in mythology, Odin and Zeus differences are more found and significant than their similarities. Odin lived in Asgard, a Aesir and he came from Norse mythology. He is stick to one when it comes to relationship. Odin has two ravens named Thought (Hugin) and Memory (Munin). He has a day and it is Wednesday and has his own palace named Gladsheim. Odin is a one-eyed Aesir and a shaped-changer, he can disguise and turn to a person he want to be. He is the father of the very popular Aesir, the one and only Mighty Thor. On the other hand is Zeus lived in Olympus, a Olympian and came from Greek mythology. He is represented as falling in love with one woman after another, he is very very different to Odin. His favorite bird is eagle and has his own oracle named Dodona. he cannot do what Odin do, like disguising. The are different when it comes to their wives because Frigga, wife of Odin, is not loyal to her husband because she has many children with other man while Here, wife of Zeus, is very loyal to her husband.…
In general, the word "god" means a powerful, loving, and merciful being, but in Greek mythology, the power of gods and goddesses come with cruelty, jealousy, and deviousness. The succession of gods and goddesses was a continuous battle. From Uranus to Kronos and down to Zeus, there was the fear of being overthrown by their own son. That fear led to deceit, cannibalism, unrest, and vengeance. Even a mother's love for her children forced her to come up with a scheming plan just to save her offspring. Kronos's is just one of the immeasurable stories in Greek mythology displaying the cruelty of the gods to gain and maintain power. The cycle of power and cruelty began with Uranus, then inherited by his son Kronos, and subsequently down to Zeus, all because of greed and fear.…
Out of all the gods Of Olympus, Hephaestus was one of the kindest of gods, the other being Athena. Hephaestus loved the things he forged and his most cherished creation being Pandora, whom he treated as if she was his own daughter. Hephaestus was also very under confident because Hera hated him. Hephaestus hated it when his wife, Aphrodite, cheated on him with Ares and then Kratos.…
