In January 2013, Sterling Household Products Company (Sterling), a highly successful manufacturer and marketer of household goods, was experiencing low growth rates for unit volume, sales, and profits which led management to seek expansion into higher growth industries. Between 2010 and 2012, sales had a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of only 2.2%, sales volumes in units were less than 1% per year, operating expenses rising faster than inflation, and retailers with high buying power (The 10 largest customers accounted for 55% of sales). Sterling identified the health care infection-control market as an attractive sector with high growth opportunities, and the product lines were a natural extension of Sterling’s current production. Sterling found its ideal investment opportunity through Montagne Medical Instruments Company’s (Montagne) germicidal, sanitation, and antiseptic products unit (GS&A Unit). The unit was profitable with an operating margin of 18.9% in 2012 and sales grew over 5% annually the past two years. However it was not a core focus for Montagne and required scarce resources and time, so Montagne was eager to sell the unit.…

One of America’s largest companies, McKesson Corporation, is a provider of healthcare equipment and medical-surgical products, software and connectivity solutions, and drug distribution and other services to a large population of healthcare customers. As the case outlines, the company is considering their future strategy based on recent industry trends, acquisitions and current business positioning. Historically, McKesson was mainly a wholesaler-distributor, dealing with customers on a transactional basis. However, the company has evolved to expand its strategy in health care, to engage customers with IT and other value-added offerings. The company has strengthened their positioning in customer relationships through creation of Health Mart, a program for independent pharmacies, and through the purchase of US Oncology (USON), a community based alliance providing operational support to practices. McKesson senior management is currently evaluating business strategy and whether to pursue an opportunity to expand the USON offering. Specifically, the plan would introduce similar programs to independent physicians in other specialties, including primary care, rheumatology, orthopedics or gastroenterology. In order to evaluate this business decision, it is first necessary to examine the USON model and the McKesson positioning within the changing US healthcare environment based on the six factors affecting innovation.…

Their goal is to maximise profit, continuously invent, labour to remain cheap and achieve market dominance. Multinational corporations have colossal influence in the international system exerting both economic and political influence. Evidently, multinational corporations gain much of their power from their capacity to operate, coordinate, and manage transactions between states. Accordingly, we must comprehend the effect multinational corporations have on foreign affairs and how they take advantage of changing political situations. Despite of this, multinational corporations subsist because they efficiently allot inadequate material such as coal and oil. Kogut and Kulatilaka recognize this as a functioning double-edged organisation. For example, Zambia, one of the poorest countries in the world, is losing money that could aid the country, due to transfer pricing when the multinational mining company Glencore shifts their profit and dodges taxes. Around three billion dollars is lost because of tax evasion and tax avoidance by multinationals. On the other hand, states are more powerful because they alone possess military power, with the addition of creating and enforcing laws. Proof of this comes from the example of China tightly controlling corporations and their activities, demonstrating that it is still possible for states to be more powerful. Hence, multinational corporations must continue to lobby governments to get their laws through, which ultimately means power lies in the…
