Helen Storey
Professor Helen storey is an artist, designer and scientist living and working in London. Ever since the mid 90’s storey has revisited what she describes as an ‘undeveloped school girl desire to understand and practice scientific research which has cumulated in a series of projects exploring the fields of biology, neuroscience and chemistry.’ (Wikipedia.com) Helen created “primitive streak”- a series of 27 dresses that create a fashion collection chronicling the first 1000 hours of human embryonic development. The title refers to the production of embryotic structure from which major organs develop between fertilization to the appearance of the recognizable human form.

I think my leotard designs work really well compositionally a lot better than the fine art piece’s I’ve worked on through this project. I like how I’ve use basic colours and I did this to represent the hidden damage and the damage we don’t really see in the gymnasts, for example things like ligament, nerve damage and arthritis, these affect so many people around the world but you never know until it’s happen, it’s almost spontaneous. I also like how the leotards also link back to my original starting point of my project really well. I think the Russian constructivism patterns I’ve integrated into my piece also work reasonably well, the fact that the patterns were originally based on soviet working class king working in fields and dancing, I love how I’ve taken that into a more geometrical point of view and tried to almost create an illusion to the eye with my patterns as it distracts the eyes from the free machine embroidered bones and muscles, leaving them almost hidden from the
