Heartbreaking Is Bad
Experiments have long been an integral part of science curriculums, but is the potential risk too great? The answer to this loaded question is a complicated one, to be sure, but it should be no. Science experiments with materials such as open-flame, unsafe or deadly chemicals, and otherwise dangerous objects should be treated with care, but all science experiments should not be banned because of unfortunate accidents or injuries. Cases like that of Meredith Plumb, a woman blinded at age 11 because of an explosion caused by the highly reactive materials being used in an experiment, are heartbreaking but are not to be used as reasons to remove experimentation from schools.
