1.2 Identify the lines of responsibility and reporting for health and safety in the work setting.

In my work setting as a Registered Childminder it is my responsibility to provide a safe and healthy environment for all the children in my care. My premises are regularly checked by the Northern Health and Social Care Trust as part of the registration process and meet all mandatory requirement.
I have attached my Health and Safety Policy, Medical Emergencies Policy, these will outline the procedures which I go through daily to comply with Health and Safety.

1.3 Explain what a risk assessment is and how it is managed in the work setting.

A Risk Assessment is a carefully examination of what could potentially cause harm to people. It involves identifying hazards present and then evaluating the extent of the risk they pose by carrying out a risk assessment, it should be easier to assess whether or not more controls are needed to prevent harm.
Risk assessments need to be completed for different activities, outings etc.

2.1 Explain why a safe but challenging environment is important for children.

Children learn by trying out new experience and making choices. However they do not have the skill and judgement to always make safe choices. This is were I come in as a childminder I have the responsibility to identify potential hazards in any situation, but I also need to judge when it is safe to allow a child to undertake an activity or make a choice.
It is important to make sure children are safe, but if is also very important to give them the chance to explore and experiment. Children learn their limits through experimenting and pushing their level of skill, and we have to help support them to do this safely.
More generally, understanding risk is all about helping young people and children to make sound judgements when coping with danger and uncertainty. It is an important life
