Health and Happiness
Health and Happiness During the fall semester of 2004 I participated in a program to improve my habits of healthy living. I set goals for myself in four different areas, Exercise, Nutrition, Sleep, Social or Family Time, Play/Laugh/Create and, Spiritual development. During the three months of September, October and November I experienced some challenges and some successes. In the area of exercise my beginning goal was to play soccer every day and try and lift weights at the gym. This started out really easy because I had soccer everyday and lifted weights on a consistent basis. After the season was over I have found that it has become more difficult to be discipline about running and lifting weights due to trying to improve my grades from the lack of effort during soccer season. The next area I would like to talk about is the nutrition area. I have found this category to be one of the most consistent areas to keep going. It is not very hard to eat something healthy with every meal. But, I have found now that I have more time on my hands it is easier to eat more junk food than I would like to because I just eat what ever looks good to me at the time. I do not think about what I am eating like I did at the beginning of the semester. Third is the Sleeping category which was the easiest for me to keep up with. I am one of those people that if I do not get enough sleep the night before it is hard for me to function that next day. So, I have tried to get a minimum of seven hours of sleep every night. It does not seem like a hard task but when you are in school, playing a sport and having a relationship with a girl it is hard to get seven hours of sleep every night. I figured out how to keep on a consistent basis. The social/family time was a good one to have. It helped me talk to my parents on a more consistent basis. By talking to them it made me feel like we had a good trustworthy relationship with them. There were also times when I found

I chose this goal because push ups are a great exercise to increase your bench press. My third goal was to get really cut and lower my body fat percentage. I increase cardio and changed to a healthier diet to achieve this goal. My fourth goal was to weight 150lbs. I chose this goal because having some extra weight will help me on the football field. I am writing to you a letter of appeal asking you to stop Communism in North Korea. Communism in North Korea has been going on for over 68 years! Communism as a whole is a very vile and inhumane means of governing. It slowly strips away the citizens’ creative ability, reduces their incentives to work hard, and slowly incinerates a countries economy. I urge you to change your ways, although if no change is made North Korea as a whole will self-destruct leaving your countries economy and government out to dry.…

Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451 was published in 1953 and carries a heavy message that holds true in today’s society. Happiness requires sacrifice. In the novel, Guy Montag is living a good generic life that’s surface deep. Yet Montag is looking for more or perhaps just something else. Bradbury uses Clarisse as a key character that further cracks Montag’s safe world. He thinks he’s happy yet he knows he’s been secretly hoarding books in his home. This is a dangerous game that opens up Montag’s mind to ideas and thinking in a society against such freedoms. He begins to question his happiness, “Happy! Of all the nonsense,” and suddenly acknowledges that he’s not happy (Bradbury 10). One peek in a book during a raid leads to Montag quoting “once upon a time” that results in dramatic life change all the way down to the cellular level.…

My specific goal is to lose ten pounds by the end of the semester. By doing this I can be happy with my weight and fit into a size three. This goal will be measured by weighing myself every day in the morning before I go to school. I will know my goal is accomplished when I step on the scale and see the number 110. Losing ten pounds will be very challenging but it will still be attainable. It will be challenging because I’m not used to working out on a daily basis and it will take time to make it a daily routine. In order to achieve my goal I need to participate in P.E and so some sort of activity daily. My goal is realistic and I am more than committed to my goal. I want to reach this goal because I want a perfect swimsuit body for California this summer. My goal is relevant to my life purpose because if I get in the habit to work out every day at a young age, I can continue when I am an adult. Achieving this goal will help me lead the life that I want to have because I won’t have to be self-conscious about my weight and I will be happy.…

Completing week one’s assignments gave me an opportunity to actually read how bad my eating habits were as I typed them in. I also learned that my once proclaimed healthy diet was in fact not as healthy as I thought it was. I also learned that I was missing key foods necessary to live a long and healthy life such as fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables were nonexistent in my life. Vegetables, I never took well to. Fruits just did not seem as important to me as they should have been, and they definitely never satisfied my sugar craves. I learned the importance of fruits and vegetables. I learned that they provide the vitamins, minerals, and fibers my body needs to live a successfully healthy…
