Harrison Nyamawi Case Study
Stories from students who were helped by GPE on how education gave them the opportunity for a better and brighter future. This is Harrison Nyamawi and is 19 years old, born in Kenya. Sadly, ever since his father passed away at a young age he has been struggling to gather money for him to stay at school. Because of this Harrison has missed out a term of school and may need to repeat his grade again. His family is saving money for his older brother to go to school and Harrison's older sister who supports his education died too. Harrison has overcome obstacles and challenges and is now a volunteer for an organisation who will help him continue his secondary education. Rashida is an English teacher in Niger and she is a teacher who understands the importance of a quality education, therefore, she wants to spread her knowledge to more children. Rashida is a strong, independent woman who is capable of surviving with her teaching job and are able to help her brother and sisters with financial problems. This is an example of how education can positively impact a person's life. But Rashida did go through some struggles too. In the final year of high school, all the teachers and students went on strike, therefore to carry on her education she had to go to two different schools to make sure she wouldn't fall behind at the end of the year. As an educated woman, Rashida has big ambitions for her and the community. This is Aishetu Mahmoudu Hama and she is 23 years old, born in Niger. Her primary education was not glory. They had no desks or chairs but she coped with these challenges. Now she is studying at Niamey University to be a teacher. She enjoys being the role models for primary school students in her community to motivate them to carry on with their education and to never give up despite the obstacles and challenges you may encounter. Adedeji is studying at Ogun State University because he believes education can take him further in life. He is currently in his last year of university and hopes to meet more people and go to many places. He is grateful for his memories at school and encourages people to go to school if they have to money and opportunity. Education is the third most important to Adedeji after God and food. He states "Education has made me do things that I wouldn't do on a normal day, it has shaped my life. It has made me who I am today." (Fund Education, Shape The Future, n.d.) This is Gilles Yakam and is 23 years old who was born in Cameroon. Gilles is a teacher from Cameroon and he believes he is able to control his life because he has received an education. Like many other children, Gilles had to overcome many obstacles and challenges too.
