Hard To Find Symbolism
"She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life (O’Connor 153)." This quote is just one of the many that shows how Flannery O’Connor can use dialogue to make you feel hatred, love or sympathy for the characters in her stories. O’Connor is a talented writer who is the author of a lot of short stories. This story in particular is A Good Man is Hard to Find. As seen in many Flannery O’Connor stories, they contain a lot of themes and literary elements. In this one story alone there were five themes and even more elements. The themes that were in this story are: good versus evil, religion, manipulation, family, society and class. Also, a few of the elements are foreshadowing, …show more content…
Symbolism was found many times throughout the story. The first time I came around symbolism was when the family was talking about Toomsboro. Toomsboro sounds a lot like tomb so that symbolizes the eventual fate the family will soon meet. The next symbolism I found was when The Misfit’s car was going down the road towards the disoriented family. The car was described as “big black battered hearse-like automobile (145).” The reason that this is symbolism is because a hearse is what carries coffins to funerals. The Misfit’s car represents the intimate death that the family will soon meet. Lastly, the final symbolism is the cloudless, sunless sky. Most people would think that a day with no clouds would be a beautiful, happy day filled with fun; however, this family in the story thought that but it turned out to be their worst day. Usually when a murder takes place it happens at night when it is dark and no one is around. This murder happened on a beautiful day, but the main reason I brought up this is because when The Misfit shot the Grandmother, she feel back looking up towards the beautiful sky with a smile on her face. This symbol represents that the Grandmother found inner peace with herself.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this short story. Flannery O’Connor is spectacular at using foreshadowing, irony, and symbolism in all her stories and many more literary elements. These stuck out to me the most in the story because they represent such big moments that are happening and going to happen. The story taught me that no matter how hard one tries to reason with someone it will probably not turn out good. I believe that to be a strong moral and I never would have been able to realize it without the use of the literary elements in

In the poem, the purpose of symbolism is using an object or reference to describe a deeper meaning to a story. The poem " Music of Spheres" by displayes that how to use symbolism to describe an object with deeper meaning. This poem is written by Jean Follain who was a French author, poet and corporate lawyer. The reason why I selected this poem, is because Jean Follain only used a few sentences to reflect its deep symbolic meaning of this poem. Language makes us human. It helps us to understand our everyday experience and ideas. It will become more powerful by using symbolism instead of the customary language. In the written world, the role of symbolism in the poem is significant. It produces the same feeling as music. Music doesn't directly tell a story, but it creates a mood and images to the reader. Jean Follain in the poem," Music of Spheres" has effectively portrayed a lonely, absent minded man kick the cylinder on a frozen road, and it stops under a sky studded with stars. It describes the man's pathway from trauma and depression to hope and wonderful future. This is his poem below.…

Flannery O'Connor's story "A Good Man is Hard to Find," is about a family taking a trip to Florida that all get killed by an escaped convict, how calls himself the Misfit, and two of his friends. In this story the reader may assume some of the men in the story is the man the title refers to, but as the story unfolds, and the family continues on their journey, every man on the story displays a considerable fault. With Regard's to Flannery O'Connor's short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" this essay will analyze the narrator's Irony, main characters, foreshadowing, and some symbolism. There are several ironies dispersed in O'Conners short story. At the beginning, the grandmother is opposed to go to Florida on vacation, but when the time arrived to depart, she is the first passenger seated in the car. Another example is the entire time she is trying to change her son Bailey's mind, she used a prison escape as the primary reason not to proceed to Florida, and ironically, they confront the fugitive in a strange twist of fate. In another instance, the grandmother insists on taking her cat on vacation with her and her justification for having to take the cat is that the cat could brush against on to the burners, turn them on and suffocate himself. The cat, is in fact, the perpetrator that causes the accident and near the end of the story when the family meets with foul play, the cat is the only survivor. Irony again is presented when they are driving. The grandmother cautions Bailey about his driving and it so happens they have an accident. As soon as the grandmother talks Bailey into taking a turn to see the farmhouse, Bailey makes the statement, "This is the only time we are going to stop for anything like this" (A Good Man is Hark to Find pg. 359). The irony here is Bailey did not know how final that statement would turn out to be. Near the beginning of their trip, the family stops at a restaurant. The owner tells how some men stopped by a short time ago and follows…

Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald describes fallibility of the American dream. He mainly focuses on a young man, Jay Gatsby, who after falling in love with a woman from the social elite, makes a lot of money in an effort to win her love. The artworks I looked at relate to material we have discussed in class because there’s a lot that are about religion. In class, we learned about religions including the Islamic religion from which I saw a lot of works on. There’s also a lot of symbolism within the artworks. Symbolism is really important in humanities when we look at pictures. For example, in The Hijab Project by Al Ahad, according to Muslim women, the Hijab is a symbol for being strong, being different, having modesty and confidence, etc. Another example of symbolism is in the Beginning/End work by Khalid Zahid, it mentions how natural resource is seen as a global symbol for Saudi Arabia. The Nasser Salem Guide Us Upon the Straight Path work reminds me of how in Christianity…

Symbolism is when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story. Symbolism in literature can be subtle or obvious, used sparingly or heavy-handedly. An author may repeatedly use the same object to convey deeper meaning or may use variations of the same object to create an overarching mood or feeling. Symbolism is often used to support a literary theme in a subtle manner.
