Symbolisms in literature

Symbolism is when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story. Symbolism in literature can be subtle or obvious, used sparingly or heavy-handedly. An author may repeatedly use the same object to convey deeper meaning or may use variations of the same object to create an overarching mood or feeling. Symbolism is often used to support a literary theme in a subtle manner. Understanding of the symbolisms is dependent on a person’s thinking as an example who had experienced failure in their life may think that black colour is associated with failure, but for those who succeed in life maybe think that black is a symbol of valor. In literature symbolisms can be defined as some elements of the story for example like a person, object, or location actually represents something else that has deeper meaning.

Thus, symbolism plays a major role in literature. Using symbolism we can show something without actually saying it. It gives the meaning straight to the heart and mind of the audience.

Snow is seen as a purifying element that covers the world in white which is good and

Symbolism is used to provide a deeper meaning to things; it leaves the audience thinking about a more profound message than what is seen on screen, or written on paper. Anything from objects to weather to characters can be used to represent something else, something that the author thinks is important to share. Imperfection is a common theme in Edward Scissorhands and The Night Wanderer, both works similarly try to convey the message that everyone has their own flaws. Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands and Drew Hayden-Taylor’s The Night Wanderer both use symbolism to display flaws in characters, and the audience grasps onto the idea that perfection isn’t everything.…

Themes in stories can be developed through many different means. It can be openly stated or just simply implied. Throughout history symbolism has been used to develop stories. Even in the bible there are multiple symbols that can be found. J.D. Salinger uses symbols to help readers understand the overall message and theme of his book The Catcher in the Rye. From Holden’s red hunting hat to Allie’s baseball mitt, symbols are constantly being thrown into the story. One other symbol that I think is highly significant is the ducks in Central Park.…

People express themselves in many different ways, one way is taking pictures of nature to cope with grief and to express themselves. Like as with “photography is full of symbolism, it’s a symbolic language. You have to be able to materialize all your thoughts in one single image” (Sebastiao Salgado). In Tennessee Williams' play, A Streetcar Named Desire, the character of Blanche Dubois is one clear example of the use of symbolism. Blanche views things in an unrealistic way, as though she wants to live a dream. Blanche does not want to live a realistic, normal life. She wants to live a life that pairs with her traditional southern belle personality. She does not want to face her problems; she wants everything to be sugar-coated for her. Blanche hides from reality and lives in her own little world. "I don't want realism. I want magic. I try to give that to people. I misrepresent things to them. I don't tell truth, I tell what ought to be truth." (Blanche)????????…

I strongly agree with the statement ‘the use of symbolism is the best way to shed light on the darker or deeper messages of a text’. A text that exemplifies the statement is Barbara Kingsolver’s novel ‘The Poisonwood Bible’. Symbolism was used in the text to highlight the darker and deeper messages of the text. ‘The Poisonwood Bible’ is a novel about a missionary family, the Prices, who in 1959 move from the U.S. state of Georgia to the village of Kilanga in the Belgian Congo. Kingsolver’s purpose in the text was to tell a story of destruction, not only of the Price family but also of the Congo.…
