In the short story “Boys”, the author, Rick Moody, uses a unique style in order to bring the story to life. The story seems to be more interesting because of the way that it is wrote. Not many stories are written this way which is why it makes it more unique. Style Analysis and Imitation Essay

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
~Charles Caleb Colton

Originality is nothing but judicious imitation. The most original writers borrowed one from another.
~Voltaire

Art begins in imitation and ends in innovation.
~Mason Cooley

In your last essay you explored your own unique voice and style by reflecting upon a personal experience from your teenage years. This assignment will ask you to complete two tasks—first, to look closely at another writer’s style, and second, to practice with a style that may not be your own. Our goal will be to build the vocabulary and way of reading we’ll use throughout the course, and to begin to expand our bag of writer’s tricks.

Specifically, this assignment will ask you to write two separate essays that will each inform the other. First, you will write an essay that closely examines the style of a published short story (sometimes called a close reading), comments upon HOW that style creates meaning, and explains how you have chosen to adopt that style in your own writing. Second, you will write a creative piece in which you imitate the style of your chosen story. As with all course assignments, we will workshop essays in class before all submission drafts are due. You will receive a homework grade on your submission draft.

The Style Analysis
First, choose from two short stories posted on Blackboard: Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” or Rick Moody’s “Boys.” Read and re-read your story until you can point out most of the stylistic techniques the author uses. You will also be asked to answer a series of reading questions related to content and style. . Take copious notes. What is the POV? What is the tone? What is the chronology? The setting? What words, phrases, figurative devices jump out at you? How do all of these elements combine to create the experience of the story? And so on ...
Your essay should introduce and then explain each of the stylistic techniques the author uses in his/her story. It should not, however, simply list techniques and examples, but should point out how each technique is contributing to the story’s overall themes. Give specific examples, explain to readers what each one does for/to the story and the effect that the author is trying to bring across.
Your style analysis should be 2 full pages in length using appropriate MLA format.

In this essay “How to Read Like a Writer” Mike Bunn, claims that college students should distinguish choices the writer made and decide whether they want to implement them in their writing; enhancing their level of writing. Bunn explains that reading like a writer is a strategy that questions, analyses and criticizes a text to make readers look at the structure, the style, the word choice in regards to several factors like: the purpose, the audience, and the genre. The author concludes that this strategy will also signal the writer’s argument. The essay ends by providing a step-by-step example to obtain structural analysis and familiarize students with this strategy.…

From the post Civil War era in which Faulkner was accustomed, to the early 1920s era of Hemingway´s short stories, both authors’ focus remains on a similar topic. Both authors were realist writers who expressed their concern with the changes happening in America. However, the writing styles in which Hemingway used, compared to Faulkner, show many differences. By comparing the styles of Hemingway and Faulkner, readers find a contrast in the authors’ use of sentence structure, word choice, and character development; but overall, they achieve a similar tone.…
