Great Expectations
Revenge, Sometimes Better Left Alone Society perceives revenge to be a one-way street to get back at someone, where only the single person ends up getting hurt. In Great Expectations, Charles Dickens exemplifies revenge as a devious act that causes multiple people to get hurt. Miss Havisham received a broken heart on her wedding day, and ever since, she has been scheming a way to get back at the male gender. The likes of Miss Havisham and Orlick are set on exacting their revenge on someone or something, no matter what the circumstances are, they will get their revenge. This selfish way of thinking shows that revenge is a factor that results in negative and hurtful behavior throughout Pip's’ life. Miss Havisham is living with …show more content…
Orlick has a clear motive for revenge. Joe fired him once Pip was old enough to become Joe’s apprentice in the forge. The difference between Miss Havisham’s pain compared to Orlick's, is Orlick was a lazy and slow worker and could easily have been fired by Joe before Pip was even of age to work in the forge. Similar to Miss Havisham and her plot of revenge, Pip happened to be the unlucky one who gets hurt when he has done nothing wrong.Mrs. Joe has an accident that leaves her incapable of anything, she is brain dead. Orlick was not shy about killing Mrs. Joe. “I left her for dead, and if there had been a limekiln as nigh her as there is now… she shouldn’t have come to life again” (53.46.3) Orlick yelled to Pip. Orlick made sure that Pip knew he was the one behind her death to get back at Pip for causing Orlick to get fired. Unlike Miss Havisham, Orlick was proud to see Pip hurt by Mrs. Joe and her eventually death. Along with being fired, Orlick believed Pip was also responsible for keeping Biddy away from him. “It was [Pip who] always gave Orlick a bad name…” (53.30.2) in Orlick's eyes. Once again Pip becomes the victim of revenge in an unnecessary situation. Orlick is so focused on his hatred for Pip, that anything in his mind can become Pips fault, no matter what the true circumstances

When Pip first begins to gain money and raise into a higher social class he begins to feel like he is better than Joe and ashamed of Joe. Near the beginning of the book after meeting with Miss Havisham and Joe Pip says this "It is a most miserable thing to feel ashamed of home." (14.1.1). This shows how after gaining some money from Miss Havisham he already begins to feel ashamed of Joe and the way he acts. Dickens made Pip feel ashamed…

Influence is the capacity or power of persons to produce an effect on the actions of others. Victor Flemming, the director of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, depicts a message that revolves around the reversal of power and gender roles. Moreover, Dorothy is a child in her physical presence but lives the role of a hero as she leads the scarecrow, lion, and tin man to the Wizard himself. Through the archetypes such as the hero being a women, Cultural values, and the stages of the journey, Flemming raises the argument that in this case those who don 't have much influence in society are very influential in the Emerald City.…

    2. Briefly describe the convict. What evidence is there that the convict has "human" qualities and is not merely a criminal? The convict is a fearful man all in coarse gray, with a great iron on his leg, no hat, with broken shoes, and had an old rag tied around his head. The evidence that supports that the convict has human qualities is he somewhat shows compassion when seeing Pip’s dead parents so he does not rob him he just scares Pip and asks him to do a favor.…

Justice isn't really about “getting even” or experiencing joy in retaliation, rather it is about righting a wrong that society would agree is morally culpable. Revenge possesses a selfish quality: arrogance, vindication, ruthlessness. Revenge shall not be confused with justice; however, societal standards have allowed these two to become false inverses. As seen in numerous novels, poems and theatrical productions, characters interpret justice as revenge and revenge as justice— so does society.…

Revenge, the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for their wrongdoings against another, is characterized as a corruption of the mind of the affected individual. Throughout the history of literature, countless authors have incorporated the theme of revenge into their works. For example, in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter, Roger Chillingworth seeks revenge on Minister Dimmesdale because of his crime committed with Hester. Similarly, in William Shakespeare’s, Othello, Iago devises an evil plan to avenge Othello of his rumored sin.…

This book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was breathtaking! Based on the book, to me the definition of a hero is a individual that is not afraid too risk his/her life for a friend, family member, and etc. The wizard of Oz told Dorothy the scarecrow, the tin woodman and the lion to go on a mission. Dorothy wanted to go back to Kansas and the Lion wanted to have courage, the tin wood man wanted to have a heart and the scarecrow wanted to have a brain. Without a doubt the Wizard of Oz told Dorothy, the lion, Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow to destroy The wizard of the west so that the wizard of Oz will be the only one left In the world. That's why I think the definition of a hero is an individual that is not afraid to risk his/her life for a friend, family member, and etc.…

“When you begin a journey of revenge, start by digging two graves: one for your enemy, and one for yourself.” A person who has been victimized and suffers emotionally will eventually focus on seeking revenge rather than by being guided by their conscience. In the novel, A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens reveals that it is better to learn to cope with your vengeance rather to act upon it, for relinquishing the need for revenge will lead to peace of mind, while acting on it will only lead to self-destruction and wanting more.…

From the beginning of human life, the effort of vengeance against others has caused countless horrible things to happen. Every act of terror has been caused by someone revenge, or an attempt of justifying a wrongdoing done to a group of people or an individual. These things have caused millions of deaths throughout human history. This is presented in the novel Tale of Two Cities written by Charles Dickens. Throughout the entire novel there is a continual indignant tone towards the nobles of France and England. Dickens uses the violent scenes in Tale of Two Cities to demonstrate three things: nothing is attained through revenge, one will lose sight of original goals trying to get revenge, and efforts of revenge bring out barbaric and animalistic qualities in humans.…

Pride and Prejudice is known to hold one of the most perfect love stories in English literature. The struggle for love between Darcy and Elizabeth, as in any good love story is one where the two must get away from and overcome a number of situations before they can, beginning with the tensions caused by their own personal qualities. Joe Wright (the producer of the film) makes us see the hardship their love endures throughout the movie with camera angles changing and music setting the type of mood, such as the very first time they dance and everything is tensed up until the rest of the people in the room seem to disappear and it is only Darcy and Elizabeth left dancing which then frees them up. He aims to portray the way people lived in their hierarchy and what people thought of others and he shows how one class would look upon another.…
