Greasy Lake
The saying “what goes around comes around” is the perfect saying for Greasy Lake by T. Coraghessan Boyle. This short story shows you the exact meaning of that saying. Now would you say that everything that happen in the end was good enough for all of their actions…no; but you can say its karma. Of course you cannot agree with anything that they did and you cannot really sympathize with him but a part of you may think ‘okay I guess they kind of got what they deserve.’
After reading this story I thought ‘wow how can somebody just do all these things…’ but after thinking about it things happen like that all the time in this generation. For me as a person I cannot sympathize with the narrator even though it seems as if they are confusing to everything that went on that night. I just think that the narrator and his friends are very cowardly and trying to be something they really aren’t.
These boys were just trying to be ‘cool’ and they thought by being these ‘bad boys’ was the type of guys girls like. But when they met the greasy character they realized they weren’t as tough as they appeared to be. But then the moment when the narrator hit the greasy character with the tire iron they thought they were bad boys. When they saw the girl the excitement in them made them think they could do what they wanted and began to rip the girl’s clothes off but they were unsuccessful with raping her.
With everything they did that night finding out that the narrator was in the lake with a dead body and that his mother’s car got trashed by the greasy character and two other guys a part of you may feel like ‘ha that’s what they get’. Of course the way the story is set up it seems as if the narrator is confusing to someone about that night which shows a good sign of character.
Now you can say that their actions that night show how cowardly the boys are because they ran when the other car pulled up. I think that this shows that they are still immature in most ways. I
