The second difference between the cinema venues is their environments. At the drive-in, you have the privacy of your own vehicle within which to enjoy the movie, converse with others within your vehicle, and/or use your mobile phone without disrupting the movie for other patrons. Now, it may be a matter of preference, but if being exposed to inconsiderate patrons and their etiquette, or lack thereof, is your idea of a good movie experience, then one might enjoy the movie theater.…

Movie is considered to be one of the most marvelous productions in human history since 19th century. People living in the old times find pleasure through reading books, watching plays and musicals. Reading a book needs imagination to see the scenes in mind and watching a musical requires sitting in a certain seat in a theater. Both of them cannot gain the advantages of watching movies; people can enjoy a film with colorful, realistic silver screen and even without leaving the comfort of their homes. Therefore, nowadays, movie seems to be the most popular entertainment for people at all ages, and there are three major types of movies people prefer to watch: comedy, romance, and horror movies.…

Most people who watch television watch it for two reasons, information such as the news or documentaries and mindless shows to waste time not thinking about anything else. While reading you are using your imagination and your brain to engage yourself into the book and think of the scenarios in real life. In television it is shown to you and there is not much room for imagination. Once you start a movie you are committing yourself to…

    • In the video this week, Bill Goodykoontz discusses watching movies as a group in a theater versus watching alone, on computers, or in your home. Explain how the availability of movies has evolved over the last century. Which experience do you prefer and why? You can rent and own movies almost anywhere now, from your phone, computer and TV. I remember when going to the theater was the only way to see a movie, now you can get it right off your computer. We enjoy watching movies directly off from our Netflix account on playstation, its beats paying late fees going to blockbusters and they’re unlimited for a nice fee.…

Secondly, comfort is defined as a feeling of relaxation, which I cannot see being a big part of going to a theatre. Americans who choose to stay home were definitely more comfortable lying on the sofa in their underwear, since you can’t do that at the theater. You can enjoy a movie in the comfort of your own home without having to worry about the gross surroundings and bothersome people. The theater seats are uncomfortable…

Roland Barthes' in his article ‘Leaving the Movie Theatre' provides us with an interesting way of looking at cinema-going. He paints a picture at the start of his article about moviegoers always leaving the cinema in a hypnotic state, describing the moviegoer is "a little dazed, wrapped up in himself…sleepy…and he feels a little disjointed." (Barthes, R. 1986) These traits are common to moviegoers as they leave the cinema. My previous opinion on these traits was that since you have been sitting down for the past two to three hours, you must be tired. However, Barthes argues that when we enter the cinema, a "dim, anonymous, indifferent cube where that festival of affects known as a film will be presented", we are entering into the state of mind that we want to become a spectator and, in a sense, be hypnotized. We experience an "absence of worldliness", a "relaxation of postures" and an "inoccupation of bodies." (Barthes, R. 1986)…

I, personally, hate going to the movies. The prices are always more expensive every time I go. When I was in middle school I could go for around 8$, and now it’s more in the 15-20 dollar range. All to sit in a theater for 2ish hours and stare silently at a screen, something I could easily (and would prefer to) do at home. The only time I have gone to movies in the past few years are with family and friends, as a group activity. The cultural idea of seeing a movie is so culturally ingrained that people actually will spend 20$ on a movie ticket . Movie theaters are probably one of the few remaining “push” innovations, along with magazines and newspapers. You have to show up at a certain time, to a certain selection of movies, and pay by the movie. Movies are highly advertised (although I am told that LA had way more movie advertising than other US cities, which I had never really noticed since I’ve lived here my whole life) and an extremely money-based business. The movies produced by big names and companies are so different from independently made movies, especially in artisitc value. The movie industry is so highly commercialized that maybe we balance it out by seeing the films in something as old-fashioned as a theater. Seeing the movie in a theater also allows you to be one of the first to watch it (except for…

Even though we have to wait until a movie comes out on DVD, or television, by choosing to watch a new movie at home, it is more comfortable and cheaper than going to a theater. In reality, it all depends on an individual’s urgency to want to see a movie. I think there are times when we all want to get out of the house for a movie night. And then there are times when we would rather stay at home, and just relax watching a movie. There are both pros and cons to each choice. Watching a movie at home is definitely more cost effective, you can watch the movie as many times as you would like, you can invite people over, and even have the luxury of eating your own food. Going to the theater, is going to cost money, which isn’t cheap these days. You have to pay for the food, which also can be costly, and most of all if you have to get up for any reason, you’ll miss a part of the movie.…

Even though they have movies on demand the movie industry has to also manage the competition with satellite and cable connections. One trend that the movie industry cannot control is the illegal movies and songs downloading. There can also be some external factors like legal and political were the manager of the movie…

First, you get to go straight to the movie, no waiting through previews of movies you do not care about. When you want to watch a movie, you just pop the disk in and press play and you are good to go. Next, you get a lot of privacy watching it at home. There are no unknown people and in turn no weird habits to be on the look out for. You also get to pick the best seats in the house, no arguing with anyone. There is no pressure to look presentable since no one can see you. You could wear pajamas, have your hair up, and no makeup nonacid face no judgments. Finally, there is almost no cost to watching a movie at home. Nowadays you can rent almost all the newly released films from your local Redbox for one dollar and buy a box of popcorn for about $3. You can get everything you need for a great movie night for less than $5! With that math, you could have eight great movie nights for the cost of one sub-par movie date in the theaters. Overall the home viewing experience is far greater than a theater viewing…
