Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Bible informs us that the Holy Spirit is a person. It also revealed that the early believers viewed Him as a person, Chris spoke of Him as a distinct person. The Scriptures also refers to the triune of God, the Holy Spirit, as a person. The Holy Spirit has many personalities. “He strives (Genesis 6:3), teaches (Luke 12:12), convicts (John 16:8), directs church affairs (Acts 13:2), helps and intercedes (Romans 8:26), inspires (2 Peter 1:21), and sanctifies (1 Peter 1:2).
The Holy Spirit Is Truly God
Scripture views the Holy Spirit as God. Paul referred to Him as the “Spirit of Life” (Romans 8:2). The Holy Spirit is also referred to as the truth, “Spirit of truth” (John 16:13). Many expressions, such as “love of the Spirit” (Romans 15:30) and “the Holy Spirit of God” (Ephesians 4:30), reveal that love and holiness are a part of His nature. The Holy Spirit is omnipotent, He gives spiritual gifts “to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:11). He is also omnipresent, He is with His people “forever.” None can escape His influence (Psalms 139:7-10). The Holy Spirit is also omniscient, because “the Spirit searches all things, yes the deep things of God” and “no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10, 11). The Holy Spirit is considered to be equal with the Father and the Son in the baptismal form, the apostolic blessing, and the spiritual gifts enclosed.
The Holy Spirit and the Godhead
From the very beginning of time, God the Holy Spirit lived within the Godhead as the third member; they are all equally self-existence. Now although each one of them are equal, their functions operate within the Trinity. It is now understood that the Holy Spirit is best understood seen through Jesus Christ, He comes to believers as the “Spirit of Christ.” In the Godhead, the Spirit fulfills the role as the executor. The Holy Spirit completed the plan, Jesus coming down into the world to save us, and made it a reality.
The Promised Spirit
Both missions of the Jesus and the Holy Spirit were interdependent. The Holy Spirit could not accomplish His mission until Jesus completed His mission. So in order for both the Jesus and the Holy Spirit to complete their mission, Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. He was then baptized by the Spirit (Mark 1:9, 10), led by the Spirit (Luke 4:1), performed miracles through the Spirit (Matthew 12:24-32), offered Himself at Calvary through the Spirit (Hebrews 9:14, 15), and was later resurrected by the Spirit (Romans 8:11). Jesus was then the first to experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Its amazing how the Lord is willing to pour out His Spirit on all who earnestly desire Him.
The Mission of the Holy Spirit
The Bible reveals the Holy Spirit’s mission. The Holy Spirit was often called the “Spirit of Jesus” (Acts 16:7), “Spirit of His Son” (Galatians 4:6), “Spirit of God” (Romans 8:9), the “Spirit of Christ” (Romans 8:9; 1 Peter 1:11), and the “Spirit of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:19). The Holy Spirit’s mission for His believers was to assist the, bring the truth of Christ, bring the presence of Christ, guide the operation of the church, equip the church with special gifts, and He fills the hearts of believers. The Spirit plays a vital role in the ministry of Jesus Christ. As Christians, we must be aware that without the Holy Spirit we can accomplish nothing.
