GO GREEN!

The importance of environmental awareness and activism is high, at least to me and my family. People in the communities work better when others are leading and giving the example. Being “green” is important because we a re trying to savage the planet earth and the future generations. Using high efficiency energy saving lightbulbs and recycling is not something I was doing because of reading a magazine or watching the television, it was something I begun doing because others were doing it. With time people come to the realization that we have to collaborate to the earth somehow, simply because it is a healthier way of living. Eating organic helps not only body by also the environment because we are using products that are grown without any pesticides or animals that are not being fed steroids or being mass produced. If every home in the United States recycled at least once a month, it would make a difference to the earth.

Individuals are helping the environment through travel, at home, at work, and in their consumer lifestyles. While traveling they can use other means of transportation or carpool, and at home people are turning off electronics when not in use and overall reducing resource consumption. At work, similar to being at home, turn off electronics when not in use, but also make sure your employer and co-workers are informed of ways they can help. Consumables can be harder as they are things that cost money, where everything previously was a cost-free initiative. Individuals can use reusable bags, change to a more eco-friendly diet, and buy consumables that were produced with environmental standards in mind.…

There is one Earth. All people who live on it have to share it, not only with those living today, but with those in centuries to come. What is done today will manifest itself tomorrow, affecting someone, somewhere. Many don’t think about their actions because what they do might not affect them in their own lifetime. As Pope Francis said, “We received this world as an inheritance from past generations, but also as a loan from future generations, to whom we will have to return it!” It is easy to harm the environment because many are ignorant of the consequences of their actions, which have become very routine. Changes in the individual mindset can put into motion a chain reaction. One person can influence many others, and one small change can make a big difference. There have been many figures throughout history that have been great examples of how important it is to respond to the call the Pope has made for environmental action and protection. Some influential activists have been Julia Hill and Wangari Maathai, both being very inspiring through their actions. People should heed…

We as humans can do our part personally to contribute in energy conservation and helping to sustain the environment through using more energy efficient appliances which can be a bit costly at first but will save energy, the environment, and ourselves money in the long run. We as consumers can purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs that use less energy and last longer than incandescent light bulbs. And the next time you’re looking to purchase a new vehicle that is fuel efficient like a hybrid car which combines gasoline engines and electric motors. I think knowledge is power when it comes to each person doing their part so feel free to engage in more research on…

For example, today many people that are building or remodeling their houses choose to use eco-friendly building materials to not only save up energy but to create a better environment or use up any reusable materials that are needed or cannot be replaced. You might be thinking, what is eco-friendly material? An eco-friendly building material is something that increases the order of energy used and decreases the impact on human well-being and basically our environment. So, it helps decrease the usage of taking up all the energy and things we need that are environment might/might not have. But using things that can damage our environment can cause: pollution, sickness, and a life of possibly a person and an animal. So, that’s why it’s important to find ways to keep it safe enough for everyone. Recycling is another kind of big thing for most people because it not only protects us but it helps animals survive as well. To help make this happen things like: recycling, using better materials for the environment such as in stores you can use reusable bags that aren’t made of plastic. So many ways to keep our earth a better place to be.…

As a developed country that continues to grow we continue to enjoy the finer things that life has to offer, but often take for granted what it costs the planet for us to have these things. If everyone just took small, simple steps to reduce their footprint, like installing Solar Panels then we wouldn’t use half as many resources, destroy half as many forests or need multiple versions of earth to help us survive. The gains from being more environmentally friendly and aware are much more satisfying than the small amount of satisfaction that you get from buying a new item that will just be tossed…

By far, the most popular argument in support of a more eco-friendly lifestyle is the fact that it reduces waste and pollution. This is the main goal of going green and seems to be a good reason to readjust the way we live. One option to living greener is to recycle and reuse materials; this practice lowers the amount of waste you produce and in extent it places less garbage on the earth’s landfills. The use of alternative energy also helps by emitting les pollutants into the air we breathe. These pollutants are known to affect the ozone layer of the earth in a negative way and alternative fuels have been seen to emit fumes of less harmful gases. As if more of an incentive was needed, when a person pollutes and wastes less, they save themselves money by reusing old items and using cleaner fuels. It is a change that benefits the planet as well as your wallet.…

There are many problems facing the world today; serious problems that could have grave consequences if not resolved within the next few years. However, there is one looming problem, which if not resolved, could make all other problems obsolete; the way that we take care of the environment, or rather the way we neglect it. The environment is a necessity for everyday life. Without the environment, we would die. How we chose to end global warming is interesting, because much of our daily uses affect the environment.…

The documentary titled No Impact Man was about Colin Beavan’s New York City family living in an environmentally friendly lifestyle to decrease any negative impact on the environment. Some actions they took for one year to discuss environmental issues were decreasing trash, using reusable resources, only buying local food consumption, only walking or biking for transportation, and not using electricity for six months. Some current environmental issues they considered when they conducted their experiment were how an increase in oil-based cars, too much fossil fuels used for electricity, and too much trash can cause an increase in pollutants in the air. Also, how conserving resources to be reused can be beneficial in cost and decreasing trash. Their actions resulted in the family recognizing their environmental impact as well as incorporating their new actions into their daily lives. While I was watching the film, there was some aspects to their plan that I agreed with. For example, being in New York City, I liked how they used the their own transportation by walking and using the stairs. Also, I liked seeing the processes of realizing the purpose of life when Beavan’s wife removed the television. I also agreed with the increase in fruits and vegetables that the family bought from local community markets. This supplies the local farmers producing the product as well as the family understanding where the food is coming from to improve their health. I enjoyed this aspect because I grew up with going to these types of markets in my own hometown. Within water consumption, the family used reusable water bottles to decrease plastic waste. This aspect resonated with me because I always use reusable water bottles as well. Within the dynamics of the film, I disagreed with some aspects. Some aspects were too extreme that to me, seemed unnecessary. With the aspect of no trash, this could be…

To be honest, I never really have put much thought into the environment and how every little thing we do affects it in some way. Coming in to college and taking my environmental biology class and now watching the documentary in this class has opened my eyes to some realities about the world we live in today, such as, half of the forests that originally covered 46% of the Earth's land surface are gone. Only one-fifth of the Earth's original forests remain pristine and undisturbed. Furthermore 60% of the world's coral reefs that contain up to one-fourth of all marine species could be lost in the next 20-40 years. Those are things that I would have never imagined, especially growing up in the area I was raised in it was pretty much all pasture and clean springs. But that’s the reality that no one seems to want to really hear. If we took some of these statistics seriously and did just a few small things to help our environment that we supposedly love it would make a much bigger difference than everyone probably thinks.…

Moreover, I aim to give back to the Earth, I’ve already started my journey by leading the Eco-Warrior club at my school to make Reed High more environmentally friendly. I feel that humanity should aspire to maintain the Earth for generations to come. As I hear about the exploitation of our planet it angers me knowing that people abusively strip the Earth of her resources; we cannot go rampantly destroying the same home which provides us with life. I am driven by the moralistic need to preserve the Earth which has given us everything. We must give back all that we’ve taken from the…
